Cobin Burnes’ early exit spells trouble for Arizona’s season
Arizona might be in serious trouble. Corbin Burnes exited the Diamondbacks-Nationals game early today after giving up three runs over 70 pitches. After ushering the athletic trainer to the mound, the recently signed ace seemed to say, âMy elbowâs done, itâs dead.â Burnes is scheduled to have an MRI on his elbow in Arizona immediately instead of flying with the team to Atlanta, per manager Torey Lovullo during his postgame press conference.
Even if Burnes hasnât sustained a season-ending injury, the Diamondbacks season is in jeopardy. Arizona has lost its last four series and has gone from 26-22 and four games back in the NL West to 28-31 and 8.5 games back within 12 days.
Burnes is the last player you’d blame for Arizona’s recent slippage. He has a 2.66 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with 67 strikeouts and 26 walks through 11 starts. Burnes has been the most consistent player in the desert this season.
The true culprits are the rest of the pitching staff. Zac Gallen and Brandon Pfaadt have been unpredictable and rocky, each holding ERAs worse than 5.00. The bullpen has also been quite disappointing. Arizonaâs relievers hold the fifth-highest ERA in the league and while theyâve been awarded the third-most save opportunities thus far, the bullpen has only converted on 18 of 29 saves. It doesnât matter if the lineup has a 7.48 K%, which sits in the lowest quintile, and puts together a .254 collective batting average if the rotation and bullpen canât keep the opponentsâ offense in check. The lineup is doing the right things, but the pitching loses winnable games.
If Burnes joins Jordan Montgomery, who ended his season in March due to Tommy John surgery, the Diamondbacks will need a drastic mental and pitching shift to keep from falling too far behind. Losing their best and most impactful starter will will likely hamper their chances of becoming buyers at the deadline, but Arizona still can turn it around. If the Dodgers, Padres, and Giants pull away and leave the Diamondbacks in the dust, however, the franchise will likely have to punt on this season.
June has just started, so thereâs no need to panic just yet, but the red flags are waving high in the sky.
