Cleveland Guardians Provide No Help to Cavaliers Fans in Loss to Philadelphia Phillies
Cleveland sports fans settled in for a great Sunday night of action.
The Cavaliers were playing Game 4 against the Indiana Pacers, while the Guardians faced the Phillies on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.
Things didn’t go well.
The Pacers built an 80-39 halftime lead en route to a 129-109 win that put the Cavs in a 3-1 hole in the series.
When fans flipped to the baseball game, the Phillies were shutting out the Guardians 3-0.
SUPER STARTERS
Cleveland (2-4) was unable to capitalize on an outstanding performance by starting pitcher Luis Ortiz.
He struck out nine batters in six innings, giving up four hits and a walk.
Ortiz gave up one run on a solo homer by Kyle Schwarber in the fourth.
Zack Wheeler (4-1) was dominant on the mound for the Phillies, pitching seven shutout innings. He gave up three hits and two walks while striking out eight batters.
Steven Kwan hit a single and a double, and Jose Ramirez added a single. That was it.
NOT AGAIN!
Schwarber smashed another “Schwar-bomb” in the eighth inning off Tim Herrin. The two-run shot to center field gave the Phillies a 3-0 lead.
Radio announcer Tom Hamilton lamented that Schwarber has been beating up Cleveland pitching for the Phillies, Red Sox, and even the Cubs over the Cleveland Indians in the 2016 World Series.
The double-dinger day moved Schwarber into a tie for first place on the home-run leaderboard with Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees with 14.
Cleveland, Detroit, and Kansas City have each lost their last two games. The Tigers still lead the Guardians and Royals by 2½ games in the AL Central Division.
The Guardians will start a three-game series tonight against the Milwaukee Brewers at Progressive Field. Ben Lively (2-2) will take the mound for Cleveland at 6:10 p.m. against the Brewers’ Freddy Peralta (4-2).
