Cleveland Guardians Overcome Depleted Minnesota Twins in 10 Innings
The Minnesota Twins traded 40 percent of their team before the July 31 trade deadline. Their owners are in a lot of debt.
The Cleveland Guardians surprisingly hung onto Steven Kwan, delighting their fans. Cleveland kept its roster intact, only trading pitchers Shane Bieber and Paul Sewald from the injured list.
Cleveland pitchers delivered 10 innings without giving up an earned run in a 3-2 over the Twins last night.
HUGE OVATIONS
The Cleveland faithful went crazy for Kwan every time he came to the plate. Kwan singled in the first and scored on a single by Jose Ramirez.
Brayan Rocchio singled in the second inning to score Carlos Santana.
Guardians starter Gavin Williams cruised through six innings of work, giving up four singles and two walks while striking out eight.
THE BIG WHOOPS
Relievers Erik Sabrowski and Hunter Gaddis gave up singles in the seventh before Austin Martin came to the plate.
Martin dinked the ball back to Gaddis, who threw wildly to first. Two runs scored, and suddenly the game was tied.
HERO TIME
Cleveland’s bullpen kept the Twins off the board. Nic Enright pitched the eighth, while Cade Smith struck out three in the ninth and 10th.
Finally, Kyle Manzardo came through with a single to left, scoring Rocchio with the winning run.
RARE COMPANY
Jose Ramirez stole his 32nd base of the season, reaching 275 for his career. Check out this statistic from Luke Potosky.
Ramirez is only the fourth player in baseball history to hit 275 homers and steal 275 bases with the same franchise.
The others are Willie Mays (Giants), Ryne Sandberg (Cubs), and Craig Biggio (Astros).
Cleveland has a winning record again at 55-54.
The series will continue today at 4:10 p.m. Tanner Bibee (7-9) will start for the Guardians against Minnesota’s Bailey Ober (4-6).
