Cleveland Guardians Lose to Texas Rangers After Another Blown Save
Cade Smith isn’t solely responsible for the Cleveland Guardians’ 4-3 loss to the Texas Rangers on Friday night.
Still, it’s hard to ignore that Smith has blown two saves this week.
Cleveland had a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the ninth, but Smith failed to record an out.
Craig Seager tied the game with an RBI single and scored on a walk-off double by Joc Pederson.
It’s hard to ignore that the Guardians’ regular closer, Emmanuel Clase, is suspended due to a gambling-related investigation.
Earlier this week, Smith (5-5) blew a save that cost Parker Messick a victory in his big-league debut.
FIGHT THE REAL ENEMY
Of course, the Guardians could have scored more than three runs. That’s hard to do when Nathan Eovaldi is on the mound.
Eovaldi (11-3, 1.73 ERA) pitched seven innings for Texas, giving up four hits and a run. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out nine.
CJ Kayfus doubled to score Carlos Santana in the second inning to give the Guardians a 1-0 lead.
Rowdy Tellez tied the score in the fifth with a solo homer off Slade Cecconi, who only surrendered four hits in six innings of work.
Unfortunately, one of those hits was another home run. Wyatt Langford put Texas up 2-1 with a 398-foot blast in the sixth inning.
A GLIMMER OF HOPE
Jose Ramirez (who ESPN.com called “Carlos”) hit a double with the bases loaded in the eighth inning.
Nolan Jones and Brayan Rocchio scored, and the Guardians were up 3-2. But the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead.
ROUND TWO
Cleveland (64-63) has lost three in a row. The Guardians will face the Rangers tonight at 7:05 Eastern.
Logan Allen (7-9) will start for Cleveland against the Rangers’ Jack Leiter (7-7).
