Cleveland Guardians Lose to San Diego Padres 7-2 in Spring Training
What do you do when the opponents score six runs in the first inning of a spring training game?
You look on the bright side. You count your blessings.
1. These games don’t count.
2. We’ll learn from our mistakes.
3. Isn’t it a beautiful day in Arizona?
That was the Cleveland Guardians’ reality in yesterday’s 7-2 loss to the San Diego Padres.
ROUGHED UP
Luis Ortiz took the loss on the mound for Cleveland. He will be one of the top three starters in the Guardians’ rotation.
Xander Bogaerts put San Diego on the board with a two-run single to score Luis Arraez and Fernando Tatis Jr.
That was the only run-scoring hit off Ortiz, but he was responsible for two more base runners.
Cleveland reliever Alonzo Richardson threw a wild pitch to score Jake Cronenworth, increasing San Diego’s lead to 3-0.
San Diego wrapped up its big inning with a three-run homer by designated hitter Gavin Sheets.
SLIGHT COMEBACK
The Guardians loaded the bases in the third inning, and Kyle Manzardo delivered a run-scoring single off 38-year-old Padres starter Yu Darvish.
Johnathan Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to score Brayan Rocchio with Cleveland’s other run in the third.
Juan Brito started at second base, but he went 0-for-3. His batting average dropped to .053.
Angel Martinez, another contender for the second-base job, also went 0-for-3 while playing left field. He is hitting .100 this spring.
The Guardians will host the Chicago Cubs today in Goodyear, Ariz. First pitch is set for 4:05 Eastern Daylight Time.
