Cleveland Guardians Lose Sixth Straight Game Despite Three Early Homers
The Cleveland Guardians seemed on their way to ending their six-game losing streak on Wednesday night at Wrigley Field.
They bashed three solo homers of Chicago Cubs starter Shota Imanaga, but the Cubbies rallied for a 5-4 victory.
Jose Ramirez provided some good news, as he will start at third base in the All-Star Game on July 15 in Atlanta. Ramirez is a seven-time All-Star.
BOMBS AWAY
Carlos Santana and Lane Thomas hit back-to-back homers in the second inning.
David Fry followed suit in the third. All three homers went to left field.
The Cubs cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the third. Seiya Suzuki hit an RBI double, and All-Star starter Pete Crow-Armstrong knocked in a run with an infield single.
Suzuki struck again with a two-run single in the fourth, giving the Cubs a 4-3 lead against Guardians starter Tanner Bibee (4-9).
Crow-Armstrong drove in Suzuki, but he got tagged out at third by Ramirez (see photo).
LAST CHANCES
Cleveland had runners on second and third in the eighth inning, but Nolan Jones lined out to end the threat.
Steven Kwan cut the Cubs’ lead to 5-4 in the ninth with a sacrifice fly in the ninth. However, Kyle Manzardo flied out to center for the final out of the game.
The Guardians have a record of 40-44, and they will be on TV tonight for the fourth straight game, if you have MLB Network.
Luis Ortiz (also 4-9) will start for the Guardians against Cade Horton (3-2) for the Cubs. First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m.
