Cleveland Guardians Go 6-1 on Final Road Trip Before All-Star Break
Last week, the Cleveland Guardians needed the All-Star Break to get here early.
However, they turned it around on the road by sweeping the Houston Astros and taking three out of four from the Chicago White Sox.
With a 46-49 record at the All-Star Break, the Guardians still have a lot of work to do.
Shane Bieber is working on a return, but the team has lost starting pitcher Ben Lively and shortstop Gabriel Arias to injury.
David Fry was an All-Star last year, so maybe he will do something in the second half. He’s hitting .149.
Still, the Guardians have removed the vibe of “this season is over” that was hanging over the team just a week ago.
TEN-INNING TRIUMPH
The Guardians won the series by capturing a 6-5 victory on Sunday at Rate Field in Chicago.
Joey Cantillo started for the Guardians, while Aaron Civale pitched against his former team for the White Sox.
Both men pitched into the sixth inning and gave up four runs each. They had shutouts going until the fourth inning.
The White Sox built a 3-0 lead when Austin Slater hit a homer in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth. Michael Taylor added a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
FOUR SPOT
Cleveland finally figured out Civale in the sixth inning, when Brayan Rocchio scored on a grounder by Jose Ramirez.
Kyle Manzardo launched a three-run homer to give the Guardians a 4-3 lead. Despite his .217 batting average, Manzardo has 15 home runs at the break.
Andrew Benintendi tied the game for Chicago with a solo homer in the sixth.
Ramirez gave Cleveland a 5-4 lead with a sacrifice fly in the eighth, but Chicago tied the score in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Luis Robert Jr.
Steven Kwan was the hero of the game. He hit a sacrifice fly to score Angel Martinez in the top of the 10th, and he preserved the lead with a sliding basket catch in left field.
BREAK TIME
Kwan will go to the All-Star game. Ramirez will stay home to rest.
The Guardians will start the second half on Friday by hosting the Athletics at Progressive Field. Have a nice break!
