Cleveland Guardians Capture Series with 9-4 Victory Over Miami Marlins

Winning the series is important in a playoff race, and the Cleveland Guardians did it last night with a 9-4 win over the Miami Marlins at Progressive Field.

The Detroit Tigers beat Minnesota 4-3 in 11 innings, so the Guardians’ win kept them from losing ground in the AL Central Division. Detroit is 6½ games ahead.

Also, Cleveland is just a half game behind the outrageously expensive New York Yankees in the race for the final wild-card spot.

FIRST-INNING FIREWORKS

Fans who were late getting to their seats missed a lot, as each team scored three runs in the first inning.

Miami scored when Agustin Ramirez hit an RBI double off Tanner Bibee. The Marlins scored two more runs on an error by Guardians catcher Austin Hedges.

Jose Ramirez started Cleveland’s comeback with a single to score Steven Kwan. Ramirez finished the game with three hits and three runs.

Angel Martinez scored on a wild pitch by Marlins starter Edward Cabrera, and Arias tied the game with a groundout to score Ramirez.

Miami moved ahead 4-3 in the fourth with an RBI single by Heriberto Hernandez.

PARTY TIME

The Guardians scored the last six runs of the game to make a winner out of Bibee, who evened his record at 9-9.

In the fifth, Kyle Manzardo tied the game at 4-4 with a single to score Kwan.

Arias said, “I’m going to drive in a run while making an out again,” this time with a sacrifice fly to put the Guardians in the lead.

Cleveland scored four more runs in the seventh inning. CJ Kayfus ripped a page out of Arias’s book with an RBI groundout.

David Fry and Brayan Rocchio added run-scoring singles. Hedges completed the rally with a sacrifice fly.

DON’T FORGET THE BULLPEN

Give the Guardians’ relievers credit for keeping the Marlins off the scoreboard for the final 3 1/3 innings.

Erik Sabrowski, Hunter Gaddis and Nic Enright did the lion’s share of the work.

Cade Smith recorded the last out, as Liam Hicks lined out to the shortstop. Smith got the save despite the 9-4 score because the bases were loaded.

WHO’S NEXT?

The Atlanta Braves are in town for a three-game series that starts tonight. Joey Cantillo (3-2, 4.11 ERA) will start for Cleveland against the Braves’ Hunter Waldrep (2-0, 1.54).

Game time is 7:10 p.m. on the MLB Network.
