Cleveland Guardians Beat Kansas City Royals 5-2, Lose to Chicago Cubs 7-4
Split-squad games give baseball fans more action, and they provide more opportunities for the players.
The Guardians picked up a win and a loss yesterday in Cactus League play.
CUBS WIN 7-4
The Guardians scored all four runs in the second inning at their spring home in Goodyear, Ariz. Lane Thomas continued his hot spring with a solo home run.
Juan Brito’s bat finally woke up, as he bashed a three-run shot to left-center field. Brito may have revived his hopes of winning the second-base job.
Triston McKenzie started for the Guardians. He pitched 3 2/3 innings, giving up seven hits and two runs.
The Cubs tied the game 4-4 by scoring two runs off Paul Sewald.
Chicago’s minor-leaguers added three more runs off their Cleveland counterparts to secure the win.

The rest of the Guardians traveled to Surprise, Ariz., to beat the Kansas City Royals 5-2.
Ben Lively fired four shutout innings, making a strong case for the No. 4 spot in the Guardians’ pitching rotation.
With Jose Ramirez back home at Goodyear, Will Wilson started at third base and hit a two-run homer to score Johnathan Rodriguez.
Wilson also singled in the fourth inning to score Angel Martinez, giving Cleveland a 3-0 lead.
The Guardians increased their advantage to 5-0 on an RBI single by first baseman Collin Kayfus in the seventh and a solo homer by third baseman Jose Devers in the eighth.
