City of Angel: Martinez Powers Cleveland Guardians to Victory over World Champions
Nobody would have blamed the Cleveland Guardians if they had been swept at home by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
After all, the Dodgers are the World champions, they have Shohei Ohtani, and they are the best team money can buy.
But the Guardians scrapped their way to a 7-4 victory to finish the series with the Dodgers on Wednesday afternoon.
UNSUNG HERO
Kolby Allard deserves a lot of credit for the win. He started his first game for the Guardians after Slade Cecconi bowed out with a groin injury.
Allard’s job was to keep Cleveland in the game. He pitched four innings, giving up four hits and two runs.
The Guardians struck first when Jose Ramirez delivered an RBI single, extending his hitting streak to 21 games.
HERE WE GO AGAIN
Then the Dodgers started piling up runs like Scrooge McDuck. Will Smith slapped a double to score Teoscar Hernandez in the fourth inning. Andy Pages singled to score Smith.
Cade Smith relieved Allard. He got through the fifth, but then World Series MVP Freddie Freeman hit a single in the sixth inning to score Mookie Betts.
Andrew Walters prevented further damage, but he was charged with a run in the seventh when Kike Hernandez scored on a wild pitch by Tyler Herrin.
THE COMEBACK TRAIL
Cleveland battled back from a 4-1 deficit. Carlos Santana singled in the seventh to score Ramirez.
Nolan Jones tied the game in the eighth with a single to score Jhonkensy Noel and Will Wilson.
Martinez then hit the eventual game-winner, a three-run blast into the left-field bleachers off Dodgers reliever Andy Vesia.
Emmanuel Clase, who has returned to his dominant self in the month of May, finished off the champs for his 11th save.
IS KWAN OK?
Jones entered the game to play left field after Steven Kwan suffered an inflamed right wrist.
The “other” Los Angeles team will come to town on Friday after the Guardians take a rest. Luis Ortiz (2-5) will start for Cleveland against Jose Soriano (4-5) for the Angels.
