Chelsea Sign Jorrel Hato For €43m
Following Chelsea’s Club World Cup triumph, the news and reports surrounding potential new signings to strengthen Enzo Maresca’s squad ahead of the rapidly approaching Premier League season have not slowed down. Over the past week, Chelsea have reportedly had their eye on Ajax’s left-back/centre-back hybrid Jorrel Hato. That interest has now materialized into a completed deal, securing the highly rated 19-year-old who is widely considered one of the most promising defenders in world football.

Despite his age, Hato has already made over 110 senior appearances and has featured across the left side of the defense, offering the kind of versatility Chelsea are seeking for the new campaign. He will likely start as a backup to both Levi Colwill and Marc Cucurella, who have become key figures at the club thanks to their development as players and leaders last season. For Cucurella in particular, Hato’s arrival should provide some much-needed relief. The Spanish full-back logged over 5,000 minutes last season across club and country, so having a capable deputy like Hato will be crucial for managing his workload and preserving his long-term fitness.

What Does Hato Bring?
As already mentioned, Hato brings a level of versatility that makes him a special talent. He is equally comfortable in either of the two positions he plays, which is exceptionally rare for someone his age. In terms of play style, he is a possession retainer who excels on the ball, consistently making both calculated and brave passes to break through opposition presses. His wide passing range makes him a reliable distributor, and he pairs that with impressive press resistance, using strong dribbling control to fend off defenders.
Defensively, he is solid in the air relative to his size and position. However, as he transitions to the Premier League, he will need to improve his dueling ability and become more efficient in one-on-one situations.
All in all, Hato is an exciting and much-needed addition to Chelsea’s squad this season and without a doubt, a player for the future.
