Chelsea Centre Back 2024/25 Season Ratings

With Chelsea’s triumph over Nottingham Forest on the final matchday of the 2024/25 Premier League season, the campaign has officially drawn to a close. Enzo Maresca and his men have secured a return to the Champions League after two years away from European football’s crown jewel.

With the season now wrapped up — barring the UEFA Conference League final — it feels like the perfect time to hand out some player grades, starting by position. And with the centre-backs stepping up as the standout performers in a season-defining finale, it only seems right to kick things off with a look at their campaign.

Levi Colwill

35 PL Games – 3150 PL Minutes – 2 Goals – 1 Assist

A season that many would describe as a roller coaster for Chelsea’s most promising talent at the position. It started strong, with Levi Colwill looking like he was ready to take that next step. His passing — a standout from his first full season — remained sharp, and his defending looked noticeably improved. However, as Chelsea hit a mid-season slump, Colwill struggled. Costly mistakes began to creep in, and he occasionally lost his composure on the pitch, which led to growing frustration and doubt among fans.

That said, when it mattered most — in the final six Premier League games — Colwill delivered his best football in a Chelsea shirt. He consistently shut down opposition threats and remained composed while building out from the back. His late-season form was capped perfectly by scoring the goal that sealed Chelsea’s return to the Champions League — a fitting moment for a Cobham graduate rising to the occasion.

Grade 7.5/10

Tosin Adarabioyo

37 Total Games – 2744 Total Minutes – 4 Goals – 1 Assist

Tosin was a free-agent acquisition from Fulham who certainly didn’t make headlines during last summer’s window. The reason? While he possessed all the physical tools, his time at Fulham was marked by high-profile errors that raised questions about his consistency. However, his first season at Chelsea can absolutely be viewed as a success. He quickly established himself as a leader in the dressing room — which makes sense, given he was one of the few players over the age of 25.

On the pitch, Tosin provided valuable rotation throughout the campaign, featuring in the Conference League, domestic cups, and the Premier League, especially with Wesley Fofana sidelined by yet another injury. His most important contributions came in the final two league matches, where he delivered his best performances in a Chelsea shirt — dominating aerially and even offering some creativity when given time on the ball.

Grade: 6.5/10

Trevoh Chalobah

18 Total Games – 1253 Total Minutes – 0 Goals – 1 Assist

The 25-year-old was abruptly recalled from his loan spell during the mid-season transfer window, as Chelsea were in desperate need of reinforcements at center-back. True to the professional he’s always been, Trevoh Chalobah stepped right back in and picked up where he left off with Crystal Palace, giving Chelsea a steady and reliable presence alongside Levi Colwill during Fofana’s continued absence.

Another Cobham graduate who always gives everything for the badge, Chalobah was rightly rewarded with a call-up to the England squad for the upcoming international window — with former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel giving him the nod over the likes of Harry Maguire, based on recent form.

Will Chalobah still be here next season? I’m not sure… but I sure hope so.

Grade: 6.5/10

Wesley Fofana

14 Total Games – 1176 Total Minutes – 0 Goals – 0 Assist

Another season where Wesley Fofana missed the majority of games due to injury — and at this point, it’s becoming more than just a concern. Unfortunately, it’s a movie we’ve seen play out throughout his entire career. When he did play, Fofana looked sharp, taking on the aggressor role next to Colwill as the two complemented each other well. But a hamstring injury in December once again forced him out, eventually requiring season-ending surgery — bringing another frustrating campaign to a premature end for the young Frenchman.

At this point, who really knows if we’ll ever see Fofana play more than 20 league games in a season as a Chelsea player? Rumors of a potential move back to Marseille continue to swirl, and honestly, it wouldn’t be all that surprising.

Grade: 5.5/10

Benoît Badiashile

19 Total Games – 1548 Total Minutes – 0 Goals – 0 Assist

Another young player whose Chelsea career has been hindered by a frustrating stop-start pattern due to recurring injuries. Benoît Badiashile endured yet another season like this, with his most notable contributions coming in the UEFA Conference League during the early stages of the campaign. While he was solid in those appearances—as well as in domestic cup matches—he never truly impressed in his limited Premier League opportunities, failing to recapture the form he showed in his impressive first six months at the club.

He’s likely to be one of the names floated in transfer discussions this summer, as a fresh start might be exactly what his career needs at this point.

Grade: 5/10

So, that’s the first group out of the way. We’ll move on to another position group in the coming days as we try to get through this series before any big transfer news drops.

Regardless, how do you feel about the grades we handed out for the players? Fair, too low, or too high? Let me know your thoughts!
