Carlos Santana’s Grand Slam Powers Cleveland Guardians over Cincinnati Reds

The Cleveland Guardians’ bats finally woke up in time to salvage one of six games with the Cincinnati Reds.

Carlos Santana’s grand slam fueled an 11-2 rout on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at Progressive Field.

Logan Allen improved his record to 4-4 for Cleveland. He pitched six innings, giving up four hits and two runs.

Nic Enright pitched two shutout innings, and Emmanuel Clase pitched a scoreless ninth in a very “non-save” situation.

LET’S WIN ONE

Jose Ramirez opened the scoring off Reds starter Nick Lodolo (4-5) in the first inning. He doubled to score David Fry.

Santana’s slam in the third inning scored Ramirez, Angel Martinez, and Lane Thomas to give the Guardians a 5-0 lead.

Elly De La Cruz put the Reds on the board in the fourth inning with a solo home run, his 13th of the season.

Kyle Manzardo hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth to put Cleveland ahead 7-1.

The Reds’ TJ Friedl hit a solo homer in the sixth, but Cleveland responded with four more runs in the bottom of the inning.

Martinez hit an infield single to score Johnathan Rodriguez.

Thomas then blasted a three-run homer down the right-field line, finally picking up his first dinger of the season on June 11.

JOSE GREATNESS

Jose Ramirez has an 11-game hitting streak, and he has reached base in 37 games in a row.

His double was No. 380 in his career, trailing only Tris Speaker and Nap Lajoie on Cleveland’s all-time list.

GO WEST

Cleveland will take a day off before beginning a three-game series on Friday in Seattle.

Gavin Williams (5-3) will start for the Guardians against Luis Castillo (4-4) of the Mariners. First pitch is set for 10:10 p.m. Eastern time.
