Caitlin Clark Was Assessed A Technical For Doing WHAT?

Caitlin Clark is the face of the WNBA. I know, I know; I have already written a PLETHORA of articles for this website, talking about how the former Iowa Hawkeye is the “face that runs the place.” She is the reason that people are watching games nowadays, and why there is way more interest in the league than in previous years.

She is the best player, and for some reason, the most hated player in the league today. Everyone wants a piece of her, and that was certainly the case in last night’s match-up between the Indiana Fever and the Connecticut Sun.

That….that had to be one of the most despicable displays of basketball that I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Caitlin Clark, who was just trying to set up Indiana’s offense on that possession, basically fell victim to a mugging at the hands of the Connecticut Sun. Not only did she get Jacy Sheldon’s finger shoved into her ocular cavity, but she also had Marina Mabrey and Tina Charles body check her like they were in the Stanley Cup Finals.

It was a wild situation that made this WNBA match-up feel like a VERY watered-down episode of WWE Monday Night Raw. These three women continued the tradition of turning Clark into the ‘punching bag’ of the league, and they were given the necessary in-game punishments because of it. But the question that I have for the officials is…..why was Caitlin Clark assessed a technical on this play? Were the zebras just feeling “foul happy,” and decided to T-up Clark like they were Oprah Winfrey? (You get a foul, and you get a foul, and you get a foul).

It just doesn’t make sense. Clark, who’s currently averaging 21.3 PPG this season, has basically been a warrior of one ever since she was drafted into this league. Players from opposing teams have had it out for her since the jump, and the people around her just refuse to do anything about it. Her teammates rarely (if ever) stand up for her, and the zebras regularly swallow their whistles whenever she’s on the court.

It’s absolutely ridiculous, and a sad sight to see. But you know what’s not a sad sight to see? It’s the fact that Fever G Sophie Cunningham got SCRAPPY for her teammate late in the fourth quarter, and finally did something about this atrocious behavior.

That…..that had to be the coolest moment that I’ve ever seen happen in a WNBA game. Sophie Cunningham, on a fast break to the basket, basically told Sheldon that “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!” She OBLITERATED (for lack of a better term) the Sun’s guard in the paint, and then stood tall in the scrum while going to WAR for her captain. She took matters into her own hands, and made sure that a statement was MADE before the end of the game.

I loved every bit of this. People like Sheldon (who would’ve continued to be irrelevant in my brain without the presence of Caitlin Clark) are going to keep pulling these shenanigans against Clark and the Fever. So because of that…..why shouldn’t the Fever get a little more scrappy? If they’re going to be under a microscope every time they play a game, then they should make the most of it and come out swinging.

But in the end, as always…..what do I know? I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
