Caelen Carson’s Injury Further Depletes Cowboys Secondary
When it rains, it pours. The Dallas Cowboys can’t escape the injury bug. The Cowboys have had injuries to three different players this week alone and will require them to miss a significant amount of time. For Dallas, the next man to make his way to the injured list is cornerback Caelen Carson, further thinning the cornerback room.
Caelen Carson, the second-year pro out of Wake Forest, will miss 4-6 weeks after hyperextending his knee earlier this week.
Carson was a standout last year during camp as a fourth-round pick, but struggled when he had to move up the depth chart due to injuries last year, particularly to DaRon Bland. Carson was also limited last year after initially injuring his shoulder, missing six games in his rookie season. Carson tried battling through it, but would inevitably undergo season-ending surgery in late November.
Carson would have benefited from a full preseason to perfect his craft and make an impression on the new coaching staff, convincing them he deserved a spot on the roster. Unfortunately, he won’t have the opportunity anymore as he is set to miss the rest of camp and the entire preseason.
Carson could have made some noise because of all the other secondary members missing in the Cowboys’ lineup. Trevon Diggs might not be ready for Week 1, Shavon Revel Jr. is returning from a knee injury as a rookie, Josh Butler is starting on the PUP list, and now Carson joins the list.
The amount of injuries piling up makes one wonder if the Cowboys will look outward for a replacement. Stephon Gilmore or Asante Samuel Jr. are two names that could come to Dallas, but for now, the Cowboys are staying put. They did sign Christian Matthew, a former 7th-round pick, and Robert Rochell, a former 4th-round pick, but neither Matthew nor Rochell is slated to move far up the depth chart to even compete for a roster spot. Dallas likely isn’t looking for a splash signing to help in this department, so they’re just relying on a couple of these cornerbacks to come back in time for the season.
The Cowboys have been impressed by Kaiir Elam after acquiring him in a trade with the Buffalo Bills this offseason. Elam is likely the corner who could play himself into a nickel or starting position, so that could also be a reason why the Cowboys aren’t feeling pressured to sign anyone else.
Nonetheless, the injuries are a huge bummer for Brian Schottenheimer’s first camp as a head coach.
We’ve already reported on the injuries to Robert Jones and Tyler Guyton this week. So with all the injuries piling up for the Cowboys before their first preseason game, they just want to apply pressure to the wounded area and stop the bleeding.
