Bullpen Bashed in Cleveland Guardians’ 7-2 Loss to Seattle Mariners

While many of their fans slept, the Cleveland Guardians battled the Mariners in Seattle last night.

Cleveland’s usually reliable bullpen fell apart as the Mariners broke a 2-2 tie and cruised to a 7-2 victory.

BOMBS AWAY

The Guardians took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, as Nolan Jones and Steven Kwan hit back-to-back home runs to right-center field off Luis Castillo.

Unfortunately, that was it for the Cleveland offence. Castillo settled down, and the Seattle bullpen shut down the Guardians for the final three innings.

At least Jose Ramirez extended his on-base streak to 38 games with a walk in the sixth inning.

Seattle tied the game in the fourth on a solo homer by Rowdy Tellez and an RBI single by J.P. Crawford.

Gavin Williams pitched well for Cleveland, only giving up those two runs in his six innings of work.

SEVENTH-INNING SURGE

Seattle thrilled the fans at T-Mobile Park by erupting for four runs after the seventh-inning stretch.

Randy Arozarena singled to score “The Big Dumper” Cal Raleigh with the go-ahead run off Tim Herrin (4-2).

Dominic Canzone, a Cleveland native, added a two-run single. Cole Young completed the Mariners’ rally with an RBI double off Hunter Gaddis.

Seattle designated hitter Jorge Polanco added another run in the eighth with his 11th home run off the Guardians’ Kolby Allard.

WHAT’S NEXT

The Mariners evened their record at 34-34, while the Guardians dropped to 35-33.

Game 2 will be another late one, starting at 9:40 p.m. Eastern.  Tanner Bibee (4-6, 3.81) will start for Cleveland against the Mariners’ George Kirby (1-3, 6.53).
