Bullpen Baffles New York Mets as Cleveland Guardians Win Series

Losing Emmanuel Clase did not sink the Cleveland Guardians bullpen.

The New York Mets failed to get a hit off the Cleveland bullpen for the final four innings on Tuesday night, as the Guardians won 3-2.

Logan Allen started for Cleveland against Clay Holmes for the Mets. Both starters pitched five innings and gave up two runs.

The Mets took a 2-0 lead by scoring in the first two innings. Pete Alonso hit a sacrifice fly, and Tyrone Taylor added an RBI single.

Cleveland tied the game with a pair of runs in the fourth on run-scoring singles by Kyle Manzardo and Gabriel Arias.

BULLPEN DOMINANCE

The Mets’ high-powered lineup, featuring Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto, was no match for the Cleveland bullpen.

They couldn’t manage a hit or even a walk against Matt Festa, Kolby Allard, Jakob Junis (pictured), and Cade Smith.

Cleveland scored the winning run in the seventh inning. With two outs, the Guardians strung together singles from CJ Kayfus, Brayan Rocchio, and Steven Kwan.

Jose Ramirez played his 1,561st game in a Cleveland uniform, passing Lou Boudreau and moving into third place on the all-time list. Nap Lajoie is next at 1,615, and Terry Turner is on top at 1,626.

OUTLOOK GETS BRIGHTER

The Guardians improved to three games above .500 (58-55) for the first time since before the 10-game losing streak.

Detroit lost, so the Guardians are seven games out of first place in the AL Central Division.

The New York Yankees lost their fifth straight game without Aaron Judge, so Cleveland is only 1½ games out of the final wild-card spot.

Cleveland will go for the sweep at Citi Field this afternoon at 1:10 Eastern on the MLB Network. Gavin Williams (6-4) will start for the Guardians against the Mets’ David Peterson (7-4).
