Blue Monday: Cleveland Guardians Bullpen Melts Down Without Emmanuel Clase

How does it feel when a team loses a pitcher to a sports betting scandal?

Unfortunately for the Cleveland Guardians, it feels like déjà vu.

Emmanuel Clase joined Luis Ortiz in the Major League Baseball penalty box on Monday in connection with a gambling-related investigation.

The lack of Clase led directly to the Guardians’ 8-6 loss to the Colorado Rockies last night.

If you bought a ticket to this game, you had to wait through a 2½-hour rain delay before the first pitch.

ET TU, TYLER?

Tyler Freeman, whom the Guardians traded to Colorado before the season, helped the Rockies take a 2-0 lead.

He hit a sacrifice fly in the third and an RBI single in the fifth.

Rookie outfielder Warming Bernabel hit a solo homer off Cleveland starter Slade Cecconi to increase the Rockies’ lead to 3-0.

Meanwhile, the Guardians couldn’t score in six innings off Colorado starter Bradley Blalock, despite his 8.67 ERA.

HELP US, BO NAYLOR

Cleveland finally broke through with five runs in the seventh inning to take the lead. Pinch-hitter Bo Naylor smashed a three-run homer to right center field.

The Guardians weren’t done, as they loaded up the bases for Carlos Santana to do what he does best. Ball four!

Daniel Schneeman increased Cleveland’s lead to 5-3 with an RBI single

NO RELIEF IN SIGHT

Hunter Gaddis pitched the eighth and gave up a solo homer to Colorado’s All-Star catcher, Hunter Goodman.

Cade Smith stepped into Clase’s role as closer, and it did not go well.

He committed a throwing error after fielding a bunt to tie the game. Freeman singled to put Colorado on top 6-5.

Tim Herrin took over on the mound, but he gave up a sacrifice fly to Mickey Moniak and an RBI double to Goodman.

Nolan Jones got a run back for Cleveland with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, but Brayan Rocchio struck out to end the game.

Logan Allen (6-9) will try to right the ship for the Guardians tonight, while the Rockies will counter with Tanner Gordon (2-2).

Game time is 6:40 at Progressive Field.
