Blame Canada: Jose Ramirez Injured as Cleveland Guardians Lose to Toronto

Jose Ramirez left Friday night’s game with a sprained ankle as the Cleveland Guardians lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3.

Ramirez hit an infield single, but pitcher Chris Bassitt threw the ball into Ramirez’s back.

Ramirez tripped over first base and came up limping. Daniel Schneeman took his place as a pinch-runner.

LIFE GOES ON, BRAH

Carlos Santana took over Ramirez’s job leading the offense. His towering home run to right field gave Cleveland a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

Toronto took a 2-1 lead in the third. Alejandro Kirk singled to score Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Steven Kwan’s throwing error allowed Anthony Santander to score.

Canada’s own Bo Naylor tied the game for Cleveland with a 410-foot bomb to center field. It was Naylor’s third homer of the week.

George Springer, who always seems to stick it to the Guardians, homered in the fifth to give the Blue Jays a 3-2 lead.

Santana tied the game in the sixth with a single to score Schneemann.

WHO ARE THESE GUYS?

Cleveland has a strong bullpen, but they can’t use the same fireballers every night. When Logan Allen’s day was over, manager Stephen Vogt called for … Matt Festa?

The 32-year-old right-hander came to the Guardians in a trade from Texas this week. He pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

Jakob Junis pitched the eighth for Cleveland and gave up a two-run single to Nathan Lukes, which was the eventual game-winner for Toronto.

HELLO, OLD FRIENDS

Toronto second baseman Andres Gimenez went 2-for-4 against his old teammates.

After hitting some early homers as Toronto’s cleanup hitter, Gimenez has sunk to the bottom of the lineup with a .177 batting average.

Other former Guardians included Myles Straw (.292) and Ernie Clement (.218).

Gavin Williams (2-2) will start tonight for Cleveland against the Blue Jays’ Kevin Gausman (2-3). First pitch is set for 3:07 p.m.
