Big, Beautiful Bunt Leads Cleveland Guardians to Victory

Laying down the perfect bunt is a lost art in baseball today.

Many ballplayers are content to swing for the fences, even if they end up striking out a lot.

Cleveland’s Will Wilson came to the plate in the seventh inning with a 2-2 tie, no outs, and runners at first and second.

Wilson had a clear mission: Bunt.

It was perfect, with the ball dribbling into no man’s land on the third base side. Houston reliever Steven Okert grabbed the ball and threw it wildly past the first baseman.

Pinch-runner Nolan Jones raced home with the go-ahead run. Steven Kwan added a sacrifice fly, and the Guardians were on their way to a 4-2 victory.

THANK YOU, TANNER

The Guardians needed their ace, Tanner Bibee, to help them break a three-game losing streak.

Bibee pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up five hits and two runs. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out six.

Bo Naylor broke out of a slump with three hits, including a two-run homer in the second inning.

Houston tied the game in the seventh on a two-run double by Cam Smith.

Bibee was furious because he thought the umpire missed the third-strike call on the previous pitch. Then, Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt took Bibee out of the game!

Still, the Guardians regained the lead in the bottom of the inning and held on for the win.

Cade Smith (2-2) picked up the win with 1 2/3 innings of perfect relief, and Emmanuel Clase nailed down his 14th save.

WELCOME BACK

Terry Francona will return to Progressive Field tonight as he manages the Cincinnati Reds against the Cleveland team that he led to a decade of success.

Luis Ortiz (3-6) will throw the first pitch at 6:40. Cincinnati will counter with 38-year-old lefty Wade Miley (0-0).
