Ben Shelton Through To First Wimbledon Quaterfinal
After suffering a few early blows, the American men at Wimbledon are looking strong as the tournament winds down.
Following an opening three rounds in which he didn’t drop a single threat, 10th-ranked Ben Shelton took on Italin Lorenzo Sonego in the Round of 16.
For the first time in the tournament, Shelton dropped a set, losing the opener 6-3; however, it was smooth sailing after that.
Shelton took the second set 6-1, won a tie break to take a two sets to one lead, and then took home a 7-5 4th set win to reach his first ever Wimbledon quarterfinal.
On Wednesday, Shelton will take on either No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner or No. 19 Gregor Dimitrov for the opportunity to reach the semi-final.
Tomorrow, fellow American Taylor Fritz plays his quarter-final match against Karen Khachanov in a favorable draw.
If he and Shelton were to win their matches, it would signal a major turning point in the momentum of American men’s tennis, with two in the semi-finals of Wimbledon for the first time since 2000.
