Baltimore Orioles Wake Up to Win Series Over Cleveland Guardians
Some of baseball’s best teams are off to a slow start.
The Atlanta Braves are in last place in the National League East at 5-13. The Minnesota Twins are 7-12.
When Cleveland beat Baltimore on Tuesday, the Orioles dropped to 6-10. The Guardians announcers said Cleveland may be catching the O’s at the right time.
Baltimore bounced back to beat Cleveland 9-1 on Wednesday and then 6-2 last night at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
The Orioles won two games in a row (and a series) for the first time this season.
OOPS! ALL HOMERS
The Guardians and Orioles both relied on the long ball for all of their offense.
Gunnar Henderson’s solo homer gave Baltimore the lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Cleveland scored its only two runs in the third on back-to-back jacks by Daniel Schneemann and Austin Hedges.
Ryan O’Hearn countered in the bottom of the third with the favorite weapon of former Orioles manager Earl Weaver: the three-run homer.
Cleveland starter Tanner Bibee (2-2) tried to shake that one off, but Heston Kjerstad blasted a two-run shot in the sixth to put the Orioles on top 6-2.
Meanwhile, Baltimore starter Tomoyuki Sugano kept the Cleveland hitters at bay. He pitched seven innings, giving up five hits and two runs.
CLEVELAND vs. PITTSBURGH
The Guardians will visit the glorious PNC Park in Pittsburgh to start a three-game series tonight at 6:40.
Luis Ortiz will start for Cleveland against Carmen Mlodzinski. Both pitchers have 1-2 records.
