Baltimore Orioles Avoid Four-Game Sweep By Defeating Cleveland Guardians
The Cleveland Guardians were unable to beat Baltimore Orioles four times in a row, but the second half of the season is off to a strong start.
The Orioles won 4-3 at Progressive Field on Thursday afternoon.
Cleveland is on an 11-3 run heading into a three-game series that starts tonight in Kansas City.
THE WILL BENSON RULE
Ramon Laureano used to play for Cleveland, so he hit three home runs in the four-game series.
He launched a 414-foot homer off Logan Allen (6-9) in the first inning to put Baltimore up 2-0.
Ramon Urias added an RBI double, so the Guardians were down 3-0 in the first inning.
HE REALLY IS SUPER KWAN
Steven Kwan started the Guardians’ comeback with a solo homer to right-center field in the third inning.
Nolan Jones added a sacrifice fly in the third off Baltimore starter Charlie Morton (6-8).
Kwan went deep again in the fifth inning. His eighth homer of the season tied the game.
However, Gunnar Henderson knocked in the decisive run with a single in the seventh inning off Erik Sabrowski.
Cleveland couldn’t produce the big hit down the stretch, as pinch-hitters Carlos Santana and David Fry struck out.
THE BIG PICTURE
Fortunately for the Guardians, the Detroit Tigers lost their fourth game in a row. Cleveland still trails by eight games in the AL Central Division.
Gavin Williams (6-4, 3.54 ERA) will start for the Guardians tonight against Michael Wacha (4-9, 3.62) for the Kansas City Royals.
Apple TV+ will broadcast the game. First pitch is set for 8:10 p.m.
