Seattle Mariners Avoid Sweep By Defeating Cleveland Guardians 4-2
The Cleveland Guardians kept Josh Naylor and “The Big Dumper” Cal Raleigh from hitting home runs this weekend, but they couldn’t win all three games.
Seattle picked up a 4-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Progressive Field.
The Mariners maintained their lead in the wild-card chase over Texas (2½ games back), Kansas City (3), and Cleveland (4).
Daniel Schneemann opened the scoring by blasting his 11th home run to right center field. Steven Kwan scored on the 408-foot shot.
Home runs are the Seattle Mariners’ forte, and Tanner Bibee gives up a lot of them. So it was no surprise when Randy Arozarena tied the game 2-2 in the fifth with a 421-foot bomb, his 26th of the season.
Bibee has surrendered 26 home runs in 27 starts.
TWO-RUN INFIELD HIT
Seattle won the game by scoring twice in the seventh inning on an infield hit.
How did that happen? Julio Rodriguez hit a ground ball up the middle and beat Schneemann’s throw to first.
J.P. Crawford scored from third, and Cole Young raced home for an insurance run.
Andres Munoz picked up his 32nd save for Seattle, as Cleveland was unable to replicate Friday night’s heroics against him.
The Guardians only collected two hits in the game, so victory just wasn’t in the cards.
MONDAY AT THE BALLPARK WITH GEORGE
Now that it’s September, teams are allowed to expand their rosters.
One spot on the team will go to outfielder George Valera. He has battled through injury and was briefly cut from the roster last fall before signing a new contract.
Outfielder Jhonkensy Noel and relief pitcher Zak Kent are also joining the club.
The Guardians are playing an afternoon game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, starting at 1:35.
Rookie sensation Parker Messick (1-0, 0.66 ERA) will start for Cleveland against Brayan Bello (10-6, 2.99) for the Red Sox.
