Dodgers’ Early Surge Dooms Rockies in 9–5 Loss

The Colorado Rockies couldn’t overcome an early offensive onslaught from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday afternoon at Coors Field, dropping the series finale 9–5 and settling for a four-game split.

Los Angeles wasted no time applying pressure, scoring in each of the first five innings. Freddie Freeman launched a towering two-run homer in the opening frame, his 451-foot blast setting the tone for the Dodgers’ relentless offense. Andy Pages later broke out of a slump with a solo shot, while Mookie Betts sparked the lineup from the leadoff spot, reaching base four times in five plate appearances.

By the end of the fourth inning, the Dodgers had built a 7–1 lead, taking full advantage of Coors Field’s hitter-friendly conditions.

Clayton Kershaw wasn’t at his dominant best, but the veteran left-hander managed the game effectively. He worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out four. More importantly, he picked up his 14th career win at Coors Field—a testament to his ability to limit damage in one of the league’s most unforgiving ballparks.

Rookie right-hander Chase Dollander endured his toughest outing since joining the rotation. The 2023 first-round pick lasted just 3 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits. Despite flashing his trademark velocity, Dollander struggled to locate his fastball consistently, and the Dodgers punished every mistake.

The bullpen steadied things from there, combining for 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball.

Brenton Doyle provided the highlight for Colorado’s offense. The center fielder went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in the eighth inning and drove in four of the Rockies’ five runs. His late blast briefly gave the home crowd hope for a rally, but the deficit proved too steep.

As a team, the Rockies went just 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, failing to capitalize on multiple scoring opportunities.

Despite splitting the series, the Rockies have continued to play well following the All-Star game and the test against the Dodgers was an impressive one for the young team trying to find its way.

The Rockies now head out on the road for a three-game series in Pittsburgh against the Pirates, looking to bounce back behind a fresh rotation. The Dodgers, meanwhile, travel to San Diego for a crucial NL West clash with the Padres.
