Owen Caissie has big day for Cubs in doubleheader sweep of Brewers
The Chicago Cubs swept a double header against the red hot Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field yesterday, thanks in large part to the bat of Owen Caissie. With the news on Monday night that Kyle Tucker would be getting a few days off for a mental reset, a spot was opened up in the Cubs lineup for Caissie. He took full advantage on Tuesday. In the first game of the double header, which Chicago won 6-4, Caissie hit his first career home run and had four RBIs. In the second game, Caissie had another hit and another RBI.
The Cubs’ offense has been scuffling since the All-Star Break. In fact, coming into the games on Tuesday, the Brewers had scored more runs than the Cubs had hits in the month of August. While Tucker has not been the only player on the Cubs who was slumping, he had gone over a month without hitting a home run. You have to admire Tucker for trying to play through it, but you cannot help but wonder if things would be different had the Cubs sat Tucker down a couple of weeks ago and given Caissie a shot.
In five games since his callup, Caissie is hitting .286 with a home run and four RBIs. It has not been reported yet just how many days Tucker will get for his mental reset, but Caissie has proven that he deserves an extended look with the Cubs even after Tucker returns.
