Hold That Snake! Cleveland Guardians Can’t Keep Lead in Loss to Arizona Diamondbacks

Tanner Bibee has had a disappointing season.

He was the ace of the Cleveland Guardians pitching staff at the beginning of the season with Shane Bieber recovering from an injury.

However, he stumbled to a 4-9 start and gave up far too many home runs.

Bibee rallied to even his record at 9-9, but he fell short of “ace” status last night in a 6-5 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

MISDEMEANORS ROW

Without Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez, Arizona’s lineup has lost much of its power.

Still, Bibee gave up a home run to Jake McCarthy in the third inning. McCarthy is hitting .209, and that was only his third homer.

Bibee has given up 23 home runs, the 12th highest total in the majors.

Cleveland bounced back with a pair of runs in the fourth with RBI singles by Carlos Santana and Nolan Jones.

Arizona tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a run-scoring groundout by Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

OUR HERO

Jose Ramirez propelled the Guardians to a 4-2 lead with a two-run homer in fifth inning off Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez. It was home run No. 26 for Ramirez.

Bibee was unable to hold the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Geraldo Perdomo hit an RBI single and scored on a game-tying triple by Corbin Carroll.

THEIR HERO

Gurriel delivered the game-winning hit for Arizona, a two-run single in the seventh off Nic Enright. Both runners belonged to Tim Herrin (4-3).

Austin Hedges cut the lead to 6-5 with a single to score Gabriel Arias.

However, Andrew Saalfrank pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his second save.

AFTERNOON DELIGHT

Guardians fans who couldn’t stay up late for the last two nights can enjoy today’s game at 3:40 p.m. Eastern.

Parker Messick will make his major-league debut for the Guardians against Brandon Pfaadt (12-8, 5.08 ERA) for Arizona.

Messick, a 24-year-old left-hander, was 5-6 with a 3.47 ERA in 20 starts with the Class AAA Columbus Clippers.
