Scottie Scheffler does it again, comes from behind to win the BMW Championship

In the game of golf, there are certain things which feel inevitable. One of those inevitabilities seems to be Scottie Scheffler somehow finding a way to win, and that’s exactly what happened at the BMW Championship, the second leg of the 3-leg FedEx Cup Playoffs. However, this victory was different than most, with Scheffler coming from behind to overtake Robert MacIntyre and claiming the win.

The clinching shot was his 82-foot chip shot on the Part 3 17th hole which was the final nail in the proverbial coffin.

“I knew it was just going to be really fast, and do my best to get it down there and give myself a good look for par,” Scheffler said. “When it came out, it came out how we wanted to and then it started breaking and it started looking better and better.

“And yeah, it was definitely nice to see that one go in.”

As for MacIntyre, it had to be an extra punch in the gut considering he had led the entire tournament until Scheffler overtook him on Sunday.

“When he’s pitched that in on 17 and then he’s hit the perfect tee shot on 18, it’s pretty much game over just then. You’re playing for second place at that point,” MacIntyre said.

“He’s the better player on the day. I’m just really pissed off right now. Right now, I want go and smash up my golf clubs, to be honest with you.”

Was this more of Scheffler coming from behind and overtaking MacIntyre, or was it MacIntyre choking away the victory? Some might say both can be true, with Scheffler being the typical rock solid player he has been dating back to the end of 2023. However, the most satisfying shot for Scheffler might have come on the 15th, when his lead was down to one shot after a three-putt. MacIntyre hit to 7 feet from the fairway. Scheffler was in a deep bunker and hit 8-iron to 6 feet.

MacIntyre missed. Scheffler made.

“That was a really important shot in the tournament, one that I think will fly a little bit under the radar,” Scheffler said.

However it happened, and whatever narrative you cling to, it was another Scheffler victory, something many fans have grown to just expect. Scheffler is reaching Tiger-level odds when it comes to being the outright winner, and there’s a reason why.

Scheffler, who finished at 15-under 265, has 18 career titles in the past 3½ years since his first PGA Tour title in Phoenix.

It is a remarkable run Scheffler is on, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop anytime soon. The next step in the process is the Tour Championship at East Lake next weekend in Georgia. Will Scheffler go back-to-back? Only time will tell, but the good bet is to never bet against him.
