Pittsburgh Pirates: Start Paying Attention to Edward Florentino
There have not been a lot of bright spots this season for the Pittsburgh Pirates, but outfield prospect, Edward Florentino has been one of them. If you do not know his name, it might be time to starting paying attention to him.
Let’s breakdown his numbers.
OF/1B, Edward Florentino came into this season as an unknown prospect to most Pirates fans. He was signed back on January 15th, 2024 as an international free agent. His signing bonus was $395,000. Florentino is only 18 years of age, but is listed at 6’4″ and weighs 200lbs. Most international free agent signings start their professional careers in the Dominican Summer League. In his first year as a professional baseball player at just 17 years of age, Florentino slashed .260/.432/.459 with 5 home runs, 10 doubles, and 2 triples in the DSL. His walk rate was at 20% while his strike out rate was at just 18.9%. Not often do you see a player have a higher walk rate than strikeout rate, but Florentino accomplished that in his first season of professional baseball.

Florentino started the the 2025 season in the Florida Complex League. He played in just 29 games in the FCL where he slashed .347/.389/.642 with 6 home runs, 6 doubles, and 2 triples. He was immediately promoted Low-A Bradenton. With the Marauders, Florentino has played in 47 games where he has slashed .265/.389/.524 with 10 home runs and 14 doubles. He has stolen 27 bases since joining the team as well. His underlying metrics on the season have been eye opening to say the least. His whiff rate is at 16.3% on the season which is in the 91st percentile. His pull air percentage is at 29.4% which is in the 93rd percentile. He has a hard rate of 40.7% while barreling the ball at 10.2% of the time. Both of these percentages are well above average for minor league baseball. His chase rate is currently at only 20.8% which is very good. This is one of the most important metrics to look at when it comes to young players and their potential.
Edward Florentino most recently landed on Baseball America’s Top 100 prospect list because of his accomplishments this season. He also moved up to #6 on MLB Pipeline’s Top 30 prospect list for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is one of the most promising hitting prospects the Pittsburgh Pirates have had in most recent memory. Having Edward Florentino and Konnor Griffin in the same farm system is a pleasant surprise for an organization that has lacked in developing hitting prospects for a long time. If he and Griffin continue to progress and develop, there may be a glimmer of hope for the big league club after all.
