Rockies Storm Back Late to Beat Diamondbacks 6–5

The Colorado Rockies showed resilience on Sunday afternoon at Coors Field, overcoming a three-run deficit to defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6–5. The victory capped a series victory in which the Rockies took 3-of-4 and highlighted both a stirring offensive rally and a dramatic defensive finish.

Making his first start since coming off the injured list, Antonio Senzatela gave the Rockies a solid foundation. The veteran right-hander worked five scoreless innings, limiting Arizona’s offense to four hits and striking out two. It was a welcome performance on the mound as the game was a pitcher’s duel early on. The Rockies cracked through in the bottom of the fifth thanks to an Orlando Arcia RBI single, scoring Brenton Doyle.

Arizona eventually broke through in the sixth inning against newly recalled reliever Luis Peralta. He struggled as Corbin Carroll launched his 27th home run of the season, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. followed with a solo shot to extend the Diamondbacks’ lead to 3–1. Alek Thomas contributed an RBI single to give the Diamondbacks a 4-1 lead.

Colorado’s offense came alive in the seventh. With the bases loaded, Ryan Ritter delivered a two-run single to cut the deficit to one. Moments later, Mickey Moniak followed with a clutch two-run single of his own, putting the Rockies ahead 5–4. In the eighth, Braxton Fulford added an important cushion with an RBI double to push the lead to 6–4. That proved vital when Arizona mounted a late push in the ninth when James McCann drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.

Getting his first save opportunity, rookie reliever Juan Mejia faced the heart of the Diamondbacks order. After getting Gurriel Jr. to pop out, the Diamondbacks strung together three straight singles before McCann’s sac fly to give them two outs. The rookie right-hander faced Ketel Marte, who popped up a ball to no-man’s land between second and third and Mejia himself made the catch, colliding with first baseman Warming Bernabel in the process, to secure his first career save.

The Rockies will welcome the Los Angeles Dodgers to Coors Field for four games starting Monday. Kyle Freeland will face off against Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
