Tyrrell Hatton’s “Little Tea Pot” Makes LIV Look Like A Joke

As someone who currently resides in the state of Florida, I feel like the “snootyness” of the snowbirds is starting to rub off on me. I feel like their stuck-up attitude is turning me into one of the most insufferable humans in the world. I don’t like it. I don’t want it. But for some reason…..I just can’t stop it.

Why do I bring this up? Well…

This has to be one of the dorkiest things I’ve ever seen in my entire life. As someone who grew up with the PGA, and the “quiet please” signs all around the tee box; the thought of having a “walk-up song” just sounds like a criminal offense. It sounds like something that you’d see in a slapstick comedy sequel that CERTAINLY did not live up to it’s predecessor. (If you know what I mean?)

Hatton, an English golfer who turned pro in 2011, was stepping up to the 18th tee (the “party hole”) during a LIV tournament this past weekend. He was getting ready to get the hole started, when all of a sudden……”I’m A Little Tea Pot” began to play. It was a noticeable surprise to Hatton, who started to laugh as he backed off from the tee on two separate occasions.

According to multiple reports, this entire moment ended up being orchestrated by Hatton’s teammate and Captain, Jon Rahm. When asked about selecting the nursery rhyme for Hatton, the former 11-time PGA Tour winner had this to say;

“We had a thing the whole week where the team picked each other’s song. And it was mainly just me and Tyrrell picking because Tom is happy with anything, and we love Caleb, but his knowledge outside of country music isn’t that vast. I don’t think any of those songs would accomplish what we wanted. Tyrrell didn’t like his the first day. The second day also wasn’t good enough. So we decided to have a little bit of fun with it, and the fact that [the party hole] was his last hole [because of LIV’s shotgun starts], it was perfect.”

It was a moment that the members of ‘Legion XIII’ got a kick out of, and that’s all well and good. They’re a bunch of millionaires. They’re going to do what they’re going to do. But to me? That’s not golf. That is not the game that we all know and love. If anything, it is just a hokey alteration of our beautiful game. It is a league that was built by some very powerful people, who throw as much money as possible at it to make it work.

Sure, there are people who enjoy LIV. There are people who believe that this Saudi-backed clown show is the future of golf. But when you have to implement corny ideas like a “party hole,” and allow a damn nursery rhyme to be played during play? You’re just showing the world that you’ll always be the “little brother” to the PGA.

But in the end, as always…..what do I know? I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
