Milwaukee Brewers Rule? Sorting Out the Baseball Playoff Race

The Detroit Tigers were the best team in baseball, and now the Milwaukee Brewers have that distinction.

As the playoff races heat up, it’s refreshing to see the big-money teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, and New York Mets not dominating the standings.

Let’s take a look at the divisional and wild-card races.

AL East

The Toronto Blue Jays have surged past the Yankees into first place with a record of 69-50.

The Boston Red Sox are 4½ games out of first. Trading Rafael Devers to San Francisco and embracing a youth movement has somehow made them stronger.

AL Central

Detroit has drifted back to the pack after dominating the first half of the season. The Tigers’ 15½-game lead over Cleveland has dwindled to 6½ games.

AL West

Houston has run the show in the West, but watch out for the Seattle Mariners.

They have turned into a powerhouse, trading for Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez to supplement home-run leader Cal “The Big Dumper” Raleigh.

AL Wild Card

The Yankees have dropped to third place in their division, and they are trying to hang on to the final wild-card spot behind the Mariners and Red Sox.

Cleveland has recovered from its 10-game losing streak and is one game out of the final playoff spot. Texas is 2½ games off the pace.

NL East

Kyle Schwarber and the Philadelphia Phillies have surged past the New York Mets and taken a six-game lead in the division race.

The Phillies also shored up their bullpen by trading for Minnesota closer Jhoan Duran.

NL Central

Milwaukee doesn’t have any big stars, but they have won 10 games in a row and have the best record in baseball at 74-44.

The Chicago Cubs are a very good team, but they are suddenly 6½ games out of first place.

NL West

The Dodgers are the defending World Series champions, but they haven’t run away with the division despite a 68-51 record.

The San Diego Padres were aggressive at the trade deadline and trail the Dodgers by only one game.

NL Wild Card

The Cubs, Padres, and Mets would be the wild-card teams if the playoffs started today.

Cincinnati manager Terry Francona continues to be a miracle worker, as his Reds are only two games out of the playoffs. St. Louis is three games out of the final wild-card spot.

With a month and a half to go, the pennant races should be very entertaining.
