Pittsburgh Pirates: How Good Has Konnor Griffin Been?
Konnor Griffin was drafted 9th overall in the 2024 MLB Draft. He is now the #1 overall prospect in all of baseball and it’s starting to look like he could be the real deal for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Let’s breakdown his numbers.
Most players that are drafted right out of high school do not typically get a non-roster invite to spring training the following year, but Konnor Griffin was an exception. He got to play in 8 games where he ended up getting 2 hits including a home run. He also had some incredible defensive plays on the field, which put some fans on notice. He has not disappointed since then.

Griffin skipped the FCL and immediately started the season with Low-A Bradenton. In 50 games, he slashed .338/.396/.536 with 9 home runs, 10 doubles, and 2 triples. He had 26 stolen bases which came to no surprise because in his senior year of high school, it was reported that he had 87 stolen bases to finish the season. With Bradenton, he had a 22.9% strike out rate whiling walking 6.5% of the time. Griffin also had an ISO of .198 and a 157 wRC+, which made him one of the best hitters in the league before eventually getting promoted to High- A Greensboro.
On June 10th 2025, Konnor Griffin was promoted to High-A Greensboro. As one of the youngest players in the league, he has not looked over matched since joining the team. In 41 games, Griffin has slashed .323/.424/.510 with 5 home runs, 10 doubles, and 2 triples. He has a .934 OPS with 24 stolen bases. His strikeout rate has dropped almost 3% to 19.6% of the time and his walk rate has increased over 4% to 10.9% at High-A Greensboro. He is progressing at the plate and is becoming more disciplined while facing tougher competition.
Konnor Griffin’s overall stats are mind boggling for a teenager in his first year as a professional baseball player. He is slashing .331/.408/.525 with 14 home runs, 20 doubles, and 4 triples, while having 50 stolen bases in 91 games. It will not be much longer until he gets promoted to Double-A and there is no indication that he will slow down. MLB Pipeline and Baseball America have him as the #1 overall prospect, not just because of how he is performing offensively, but because he is a 5-tool prospect that can play shortstop and centerfield at an extremely high level.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have had a terrible year at the big league level, but Konnor Griffin has been one of the few bright spots on the season and should give the fans some hope for the future. They have not had a hitting prospect like Griffin since Andrew McCutchen and we all know how well the Pirates were when McCutchen was in his prime. Hopefully Griffin can bring that kind of success back in the city of Pittsburgh in the near future.
