Blue Jays Overpower Rockies with Five Home Runs in 10–4 Rout

The Colorado Rockies fell victim to an offensive onslaught Tuesday night at Coors Field, as the Toronto Blue Jays slugged five home runs — including two by Daulton Varsho — en route to a decisive 10–4 win. The loss drops the Rockies to 30–83 on the season, further cementing their spot at the bottom of the National League standings.

What began as a promising night for Colorado quickly unraveled in familiar fashion. Rookie slugger Hunter Goodman gave the Rockies a 2–0 lead in the bottom of the first with a towering two-run homer but the Blue Jays then took over.

Toronto struck back in the top of the third, when Nathan Lukes launched a solo homer to right-center off Rockies starter Anthony Molina. In the top of the fourth, Varsho blasted a two-run home run, his first of the game, to give the Blue Jays the lead that they would not surrender.

The real damage came in the sixth inning, when Molina lost all command. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. blasted a towering home run to right field followed by Addison Barger’s 17th home run of the season to make it 5-2 Toronto. After a walk to Alejandro Kirk, Varsho belted his second home run of the game to give the Blue Jays a healthy 7-2 lead. Molina, making just his second MLB start, lasted five-plus innings but was charged with seven earned runs on nine hits. Guerrero Jr. and Varsho added RBI doubles in the top of the ninth to drive in three runs.

Offensively, the Rockies managed nine hits but couldn’t capitalize much after the first inning. They added two runs in the seventh courtesy of a Mickey Moniak single and Warming Bernabel’s base knock, but it wasn’t enough as they couldn’t get the big hit later on. They stranded seven base runners and went 3-for-9 with RISP.

Adding to the Rockies’ woes, third baseman Orlando Arcia exited the game early after an awkward swing led him to favor his right arm. Later on, Thairo Estrada seemingly pulled a hamstring trying to beat out a throw to first base.

The Rockies will try to avoid the sweep on Wednesday afternoon. Lefty Kyle Freeland is scheduled to make his third start since returning from the injured list, while Toronto counters with Kevin Gausman.
