Eovaldi Fires 8 Shutout As Rangers Beat Yankees 2-0

The last time the Texas Rangers shut out the Yankees was on April 29th, 2023.

Who led that charge, you may ask?

Well, that would be none other than Nathan Eovaldi, who threw a complete game shutout.

Nearly two and a half years later, Eovaldi was at the forefront of yet another Rangers shutout of the Bronx Bombers.

Eovaldi fired eight shutout innings, allowing just one base runner as the Rangers blanked New York by a score of 2-0.

“I felt really good out there tonight,” Eovaldi said. “I think it’s just been trying to build upon previous outings. I felt pretty in sync today. In the first few innings, I think I got away with a couple of pitches, but by the 4th inning, I made a mechanical adjustment and felt really smooth out there”.

With the eight scoreless tonight, Eovaldi lowered his season ERA to just 1.38. That’s the lowest mark through a pitcher’s first 19 games in franchise history and the lowest for any AL starting pitcher in such a span since Oakland’s Vida Blue in 1971.

“He’s just an artist out there,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said. “His pitchability, command, and focus, to have a plan, he reads swings and can adjust on the fly, all those things. He’s got four pitches with command of all of them that he can throw at any time, he’s having so much success”.

After countless missed opportunities and a 0-13 mark with runners in scoring position, the Rangers rallied in the 8th, putting up the games lone offense.

With one out, Adolis Garcia laced a double down the left field line, followed by back-to-back walks from Joc Pederson, who reached base in all four of his plate appearances tonight, and Wyatt Langford loaded the bases for Rowdy Tellez.

Battling against Devin Williams, Tellez fought off several tough pitches before eventually flipping a two-RBI single into right field for the game’s lone runs.

“He battled,” Bochy said. “That was a grind of an at-bat, and he came through. He got a changeup that he got enough of with a huge hit there.”

With the win, the Rangers claimed the series against the Yankees and took home their AL-high 11th shutout of the season as well as their 8th consecutive home game.

“I think it shows the fight in them,” Bochy finished. “We’ve had some tough losses, and they’re doing a great job of bouncing back. It’s all about being resilient in this game, and we’ve come in here and won two really hard-fought games that could have gone either way”.
