Old-School American League Baseball Leads Cleveland Guardians Past New York Mets
The Cleveland Guardians outlasted the New York Mets 7-6 in 10 innings on Monday night at Citi Field by playing American League-style baseball.
Before the Guardians could employ these tactics, the fans were treated to a pitcher’s duel.
Slade Cecconi of the Guardians and Sean Manaea of the Mets pitched five scoreless innings apiece.
THE FIVE SPOT
Cleveland broke through in the sixth inning with five runs off Manaea.
David Fry singled to score Steven Kwan. Carlos Santana followed with a single to bring home Angel Martinez.
Gabriel Arias delivered an American League special: the three-run homer! Earl Weaver would have been proud of the 440-foot blast.
However, the Mets’ powerful lineup eventually wiped out the 5-0 deficit.
Pete Alonso hit his own three-run bomb in the sixth and added a run-scoring single in the eighth.
Mark Vientos hit a sacrifice fly to score Juan Soto in the eighth to tie the game.
EXTRA INNINGS
The Guardians added its signature “small-ball” approach to take the lead in the 10th.
David Fry tried a sacrifice bunt, and third baseman Brent Baty threw wildly past second base. Daniel Schneemann scored the go-ahead run.
Cleveland increased the lead to 7-5 when Arias hit a sacrifice fly to score Jose Ramirez.
Baty tried to make amends with an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th. But Guardians reliever Nic Enright got Luis Torrens to fly out to secure his first save.
ANOTHER BITE OF THE APPLE
Logan Allen (7-9) will start tonight’s game for the Guardians. Clay Holmes (9-6) will throw the first pitch for the Mets at 7:10.
