Cleveland Guardians Pitchers Strike Out 15 Minnesota Twins in 5-4 Victory

The Cleveland Guardians’ relief pitchers got to work in the fifth inning, and that’s usually a bad sign.

Instead, they struck out 10 batters and allowed the Guardians to beat the Minnesota Twins 5-4 at Progressive Field on Saturday.

Cleveland’s record is 56-54 after four straight wins. The Guardians have made up all of the ground they lost in their 10-game losing streak last month.

Guardians starter Tanner Bibee recorded five strikeouts, but he gave up four runs in just under five innings.

WELCOME THE NEW KID

CJ Kayfus (pictured with the Akron RubberDucks) joined the Guardians and hit an RBI grounder to score Bo Naylor in the second inning.

Daniel Schneeman hit a solo homer, his 10th of the season, later in the inning.

Bibee’s struggles with the home-run ball continued, as Matt Wallner blasted a two-run bomb in the fourth to tie the game 2-2.

Minnesota pulled ahead with two runs in the fifth. Trevor Larnach hit an RBI single, and Royce Lewis added a run-scoring double.

HE’S OUR MVP

Jose Ramirez launched a two-run homer off Twins starter Bailey Ober to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth.

Cleveland’s bullpen (Matt Festa, Erik Sabrowski, Nic Enright, and Hunter Gaddis) shut down the Twins for the rest of the game.

Enright struck out both hitters he faced in the eighth to improve his record to 2-0.

Gaddis fanned three batters in the ninth for his first save.

Wait! We need a game-winning hit in this story. Bo Naylor did the honors with a double in the eighth to score Ramirez.

IT’S BROOM TIME

Cleveland will go for the sweep today at 1:40 p.m. at Progressive Field.

Joey Cantillo (2-1, 4.14 ERA) will start for Cleveland against the Twins’ Jose Urena (0-0, 5.40).
