Rockies Ride Beck’s Blast and Bernabel’s Bat to 8–5 Victory Over Pirates
On a Saturday afternoon full of twists, turns, and weather delays, the Colorado Rockies found a way to win a game that almost slipped through their fingers. Powered by a momentum-shifting home run from Jordan Beck and a three-hit performance by Warming Bernabel, the Rockies overcame a historic day from Liover Peguero and outlasted the Pittsburgh Pirates 8–5 at Coors Field.
Peguero homered on the second pitch of the afternoon off Rockies starter Austin Gomber, setting the tone for what would become a career day for the Pirates infielder. He would go on to hit two more home runs, driving in five of Pittsburgh’s runs, becoming just the second player in Pirates history with a three-homer game in Denver.
But while Peguero stole headlines, the Rockies stole the game.
Gomber labored through five innings, allowing four runs—three earned—on five hits while striking out five. He exited with the Rockies trailing 4–0 after Peguero’s second home run in the fifth, a three-run blast that looked like it might put the game out of reach.
Instead, it lit a fire under Colorado’s bats.
The turning point came in the bottom of the sixth when the Rockies finally broke through against Paul Skenes. The fireball right-hander was cruising through the game after a spectacular month of July. He had struck out eight batters through five innings, averting a threat from the Rockies in the fourth. Mickey Moniak got things started with a single followed by an Ezequiel Tovar walk. Beck then blasted an opposite field home run to get the Rockies back in the gme down 4-3. Bernabel then laced a double, forcing a pitching change for Pittsburgh.
Thairo Estrada welcomed the new arm with a single, followed by an RBI single from Brenton Doyle, Friday night’s walk-off hero, to tie the game 4-4. Austin Nola later delivered a one-out RBI double to give the Rockies the lead. Orlando capped of the six-run inning with an RBI groundout to make it a 6-4 Rockies lead.
The Rockies didn’t stop as Bernabel added an RBI single in the seventh and another in the eighth via an Arcia home run after a 65-minute rain delay to make it 8-4. Bernabel now has a seven-game hitting streak to begin his big league career and is now hitting .500. Additionally, Bernabel is the second player in the modern era to have 14+ hits and 8+ extra-base hits through seven career games, joining Mitchell Page in 1977.
The Rockies’ bullpen held up in relief of Gomber, with Jaden Hill, Juan Mejia, and Victor Vodnik bridging the gap to the ninth. Seth Halvorsen entered to close things out but was removed after five pitches due to apparent elbow discomfort—a potentially concerning development for Colorado’s already thin bullpen. In his place, Dugan Darnell took the mound and sealed the win after allowing Peguero’s third home run of the day.
The win gives Colorado its second straight over Pittsburgh and secures the series victory heading into Sunday’s finale. They improved their record to 30-80 and 8-6 since the All-Star Break. Bradley Blalock takes the mound for the Rockies, facing off against Mitch Keller for the Pirates.
