A Look Into the 2025 Eagles’ Training Camp
With a week’s worth of training camp now under their belts, full pads on, and preseason football on the horizon, the Eagles are looking to prove that last season was no mistake; they deserve to be at the top. So far, there have been several positive reports coming out of camp that share several strong performances from all the returning vets and the team’s rookies alike, all while adjusting to a new offensive coordinator while trying to iron out the situational struggles that come up between Kevin Patullo and the team’s offense. Overall, though, the vibe of camp seems optimistic as the reigning Super Bowl champions look to make history as they go back to fundamentals in drills at practice, focusing on tackling, ball security, blocking, and taking care of the football.

The biggest question going into camp was about Kevin Patullo, and now, a week in, he has seemed to integrate into this well-oiled machine a lot quicker than many expected. As the team’s previous associate head coach and passing game coordinator, before taking on the role of offensive coordinator, he’s already had a rapport with the majority of the team’s offense. Now, he’s expanding from just the passing game, and things are starting to fall back into place, even with a new coordinator at the helm of this run-heavy generation of the Eagles. 2024 Super Bowl MVP, Jalen Hurts, has been instrumental in this new era of the Eagles’ offense, especially last year after stepping into the role of playmaker as the team searched for a new anchor as they adjusted to an offensive line without Jason Kelce. Patullo’s established relationship history with Hurts, and this latest chapter to his career on the Eagles’ coaching staff, has allowed the team’s coveted quarterback to sing praises of Patullo’s collaborative leadership approach even louder. With the expanded homework Patullo did during the offseason to fill the gaps in his knowledge of the team, on top of the bedrock that is his relationship with head coach Nick Sirianni, the team has been able to bypass the general “getting-to-know-you” phase that usually happens when hiring a new offensive coordinator. In addition to that, it’s clear that the team’s run game coordinator and offensive line coach, Jeff Stoutland, is working to make the best even better, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia. After practice, he spent time with reporters and talked about how he’s trying to improve the best offensive line in the game.
One of the biggest storylines to follow is that of the lone starting position that’s up for grabs. With an opening at right guard, the front runner to take the spot is an “internal hire.” Third-year man Tyler Steen has worked with the first team throughout camp, and Stoutland has seemed to be impressed by the work Steen has been putting in. After practice on July 29th, Stoutland was presented with the Pro Football Writers Association Paul “Dr. Z” Zimmerman Award, an annual lifetime achievement honor presented to an NFL coach. It is a great acknowledgment and deserved recognition for Stoutland, who has arguably been the best offensive line coach in the NFL since joining the coaching staff in 2013 in the Chip Kelly era.

Another major storyline to be excited over is the surplus of young talent the team boasts. The least active of all the rooks is defensive tackle Ty Robinson, as he has the most congested path to the NFL roster, but even Robinson has deflected two passes, showcasing some potential for the future. Eagles fifth-round draft pick, Drew Kendall, has also proven to be a valuable asset, even getting some reps with the first-team squad at center while the team’s first string, Cam Jurgens, continues to recover from back surgery. The most exciting development, however, has to be the middle linebacker duo of Jihaad Campbell and Smael Mondon Jr.. With the team’s first-string LBs, Zack Baun and Nakobe Dean continue to recover as well, the two rookies have gotten to shine in camp as they both have gotten significant reps with the first-team. Campbell, a South Jersey local, has been enjoying training camp with his childhood team, setting the scene for one of the most heartwarming plotlines of the 2025 season if he can remain healthy and get some playing time during the regular season. While his aggression during plays needs to be refined, his versatility has allowed him to integrate into the first team’s defensive reps, impacting the team’s linebacker rotation on the depth chart coming out of camp. The most impressive rookie, however, has to be fellow middle linebacker, fifth-round pick, Smael Mondon Jr., who has seemed to turn the most heads during this week of camp. Despite being the 161st overall pick in the 2025 draft, Mondon has seen significant playing time as he’s been healthy throughout camp (who shined in his single man coverage against Saquon Barkley), and continues to impress with his elite coverage skills and ability to disrupt the play, seeming to overshadow Campbell, who quickly made an impact at camp early on.
Whether it’s the second-year cornerback duo of Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, or the new rookie class, the moments in which the younger members of this roster take some reps, it’s clear just how strategic the Eagles have been in recent years’ drafts. The team’s most anticipated rookies from both 2024 and 2025 are starting to shape a new form of Eagles defense. Vic Fangio led the birds to be the number one defense in 2024; however, he had lost a number of those key contributors this past offseason, including edge rushers Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat, defensive tackle Milton Williams, safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and cornerback Darius Slay. So saying Fangio’s 2025 secondary in particular needs some shaping is an understatement. Williams’ projected replacement at defensive tackle, Moro Ojomo, has only heightened the buzz around him entering camp by consistently piercing into the backfield. Left tackle Jordan Mailata is his biggest hype man, doating to all that Ojomo is “going to be special.” Ojomo’s emergence, as well as the expected leveled-up play of guys such as Jalen Carter, Quinyon Mitchell, and DeJean, bodes well for a unit that finished tops in passing yards allowed per game (174.2) and second in points per game (17.8) a year ago.

The most exciting position race has to be for Fangio’s cornerback position, in the wake of Darius Slay Jr.’s departure. Sophomore cornerback Quinyon Mitchell has been slated to step up in a big way, anchoring their secondary in Slay’s absence and rising to be their CB1. After covering AJ Brown during practice today, it’s clear he’s up for the challenge, as he’s ready to go up against some of the league’s best receivers. The hole outside opposite of Mitchell seems to be the other most significant question mark on the projected opening day roster. The competition for the starting spot opposite Mitchell is primarily between Kelee Ringo and Adoree’ Jackson. Ringo, a third-year player, has shown flashes of talent but needs to continue refining his technique and demonstrate consistency before officially landing the job. Jackson’s veteran presence has led to some success during camp as well, but his overall performance has been mixed, with some questions as to whether or not he truly is the team’s long-term solution. Cooper DeJean, also following an impressive rookie season, is slated to be the starting nickel cornerback; however, there’s speculation about the twenty-two-year-old potentially expanding his role to include snaps at safety and even as the outside CB, if Ringo or Jackson don’t perform to par.
The Eagles will have their first preseason game next Thursday at the Linc against Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals. One can likely expect the birds to establish early momentum while the starters are in the game. While a specific margin is speculative, the Eagles are likely to edge ahead, hopefully, with Jalen Hurts leading at least one scoring drive, before the match transitions to depth evaluation. One thing that’s for sure is that with football season right around the corner, it’ll be exciting to watch as this Philadelphia team tries to do the impossible.
