Tovar’s Late Heroics Power Rockies Past Orioles in Thrilling 6–5 Win

On a hot summer night at Camden Yards, the Colorado Rockies flipped the script on a game that looked destined to be another frustrating chapter in their difficult 2025 season. Down early after a barrage of Orioles home runs, Colorado clawed their way back and rode a go-ahead eighth-inning blast from Ezequiel Tovar to a gritty 6–5 win over Baltimore on Friday night.

It was a game that featured seven home runs, two lead changes, and a rare glimpse of momentum for a Rockies team that has struggled to string wins together. The victory was Colorado’s third in a row — just the third time all season they’ve accomplished that feat — and improved their record to 27–76.

The Orioles wasted no time jumping on Rockies starter Kyle Freeland, hammering four solo home runs in the first two innings to take a commanding 4–0 lead. Jordan Westberg and Tyler O’Neill drilled home runs in the first followed by Coby Mayo and Alex Jackson in the second inning.

Freeland, who has labored through an up-and-down season, looked to be on the ropes early but managed to settle in. He didn’t allow another run across his final four innings of work and kept the Rockies within striking distance.

Colorado’s response came in waves, beginning in the third inning when Mickey Moniak launched a solo homer. In the fourth, Thairo Estrada cut the deficit to one with a two-run shot to left, his third of the year.

The fifth inning saw the Rockies take their first lead of the game. After Moniak walked, Hunter Goodman laced a double to left field to drive in the run and tie the game 4-4. One batter later, Jordan Beck punched a single through the right side to bring Goodman around and give Colorado a 5–4 lead.

The lead didn’t last long. Baltimore tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when Jackson Holliday ripped a two-out RBI single off Jake Bird, evening the score at 5–5.

But in the very next inning, Ezequiel Tovar came through with the swing of the night. With one out in the top of the eighth, Tovar crushed an 0-1 sinker from Andrew Kittredge deep into the left-field seats to restore the lead for good. Seth Halvorsen, continuing to emerge as a late-inning option in the Rockies bullpen, worked a clean ninth to pick up his 10th save of the year.

The Rockies have shown modest signs of life since the All-Star break, going 5–2 since the midsummer classic. The Rockies and Orioles continue their three-game series Saturday evening with Antonio Senzatela facing off against Trevor Rogers.
