Rockies select Nick Anderson, DFA Sean Bouchard
On the same day that the Colorado Rockies reportedly traded Ryan McMahon to the New York Yankees, the club announced additional roster moves prior to their weekend series against the Baltimore Orioles.
The Rockies announced they have selected the contract of right-hander Nick Anderson from Triple-A Albuquerque, as first reported by Chase Ford of MiLB Central on Thursday. Additionally, they have placed reliever Victor Vodnik on the paternity list, optioned second baseman Adael Amador to Triple-A, reinstated second baseman Thairo Estrada from the injured list, and designated outfielder Sean Bouchard for assignment.
Anderson, 35, signed a minor league pact with Colorado back in late May. He spent the early portion of the season with the Cardinals’ Triple-A club after originally signing a minor league deal with St. Louis. He opted out of that deal before landing with Colorado. The veteran has been effective when on healthy but injuries have hampered him greatly over his five big league seasons. When healthy, Anderson has pitched 158 1/3 innings with a 3.18 ERA, a 31.6% strikeout rate and a 7.8% walk rate. He boasts an excellent 34.1% opponents’ chase rate and 15.4% swinging-strike rate in his big league career. He has pitched 11 1/3 innings with the Rockies’ Triple-A club and allowed six runs on 13 hits and six walks (three intentional) with 15 strikeouts. He joins a bullpen that has been better than its numbers may suggest at times, and he could find a way to stick around if the team makes additional trades from the bullpen.
The big news of the roster moves was the DFA of Bouchard. The 29-year-old has seen action in each of the past four seasons for the Rockies but has battled frequent injuries — most notably missing nearly the entire 2023 season due to a torn biceps. He has shown plenty of promise early in his career, slashing .304/.429/.563 in 140 plate appearances from 2022-23. The Rockies always praised his contact rates and success in the minors, applauding his professional at-bats.
Unfortunately, that success never really translated to the big league level. Since returning from that biceps injury, he has hit just .178/.272/.274 in 181 big league plate appearances. His minor league strikeout rate has spiked to 33.2% while his big league strikeout rate, in 73 plate appearances, jumped to 37%. He’s been awarded chances but hasn’t been able to do much with them and with some many other young outfielders to break in, the chances have mostly dried up for Bouchard. He has certainly looked the part of a power-hitting outfielder in the minors at glimpses in the big leagues, but the consistency hasn’t followed at the Rockies now look for other options.
They will have five days to trade him or place him on outright waivers. Since he has never been outrighted before, he would stay in the organization through the end of the season, likely as a non-roster depth piece in Triple-A.
