Former Round Rock Express Stars Shine In Rangers 7-2 Win Over The A’s

Monday night’s series opener between the Rangers and the Athletics was played at Globe Life Field in Arlington, but it might as well have been played at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.

Josh Jung and Michael Helman, who were recalled from the Express today, as well as Cody Freeman, whose contract was selected Friday, all came up huge in what Bruce Bochy called “Round Rock Night”.

The former E-Train and now Rangers trio combined to knock in six of the seven Texas runs in a big 7-2 series-opening win over the Athletics.

“It says a lot [about the depth of the organization] Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said after the game. “What a job they all did. You gotta have depth. We needed some help. I’ll say this too: I think it shows that BP is overrated because Helman and Jung got here about 6:30, didn’t take batting practice or anything, just put on a uniform, the old school way of playing; and that tells you something, going out there playing the game, [not] overworking and just playing the game”.

Jung got things started in the second when he blasted a solo shot in his first AB since being recalled from AAA. He reached base in all three of his plate appearances with a walk in the fifth and single in the seventh to go with the homer.

“It probably was [important for Jung to have a good first game back],” Bochy said. “It’s not easy to accept what happened, going down there and trying to get a reset. I’m sure there’s some confidence shaken. That’s the human part of this game, but he went down there, worked, and we need him up here, his presence, defense, at-bats, everything, so I thought it was big for him to have a great start”.

The 5th inning was an inning of firsts as Cody Freeman broke a 1-1 tie when he laced an RBI double into the right-center field gap for his first MLB hit and RBI.

On the very next pitch, Helman drove a three-run home run over the left field wall to cap a four-run frame and make it 5-1.

“It does a lot for the club,” Bochy said. “You look at the game, and we only had one hit there, and we weren’t doing a lot offensively. Sure, it does a lot for the club, especially when their guy is doing a terrific job. It’s good to break it open”.

On the mound, Jack Leiter turned in his 4th career quality start, earning his 6th win of the season, going six innings, allowing just four hits and two runs while striking out seven.

“Nice job,” Bochy said. “He did have to pitch around some walks [4], but he regrouped and made pitches when he had to. Good stuff, good mix, really nice job by Jack”.
