Rockies kick off second half with a blast, winning 6-4 over the Twins

Hoping to put the right foot forward for the second half of the season, the Colorado Rockies welcomed the Minnesota Twins to town and ended up powering their way to a 6-4 victory on Friday night.

Before many fans had settled into their seats in the bottom of the first, the Rockies smacked four consecutive extra-base hits to take an early 4-0 lead. Tyler Freeman opened the bottom frame with a double, followed by another from Mickey Moniak to score the game’s first run. Jordan Beck then tripled to right-center, and Ryan McMahon capped the sequence with a towering two-run home run—his 14th of the season—into the second deck.

That first-inning burst gave Colorado a 4–0 lead, and they weren’t done. In the second inning, Beck—who was red-hot all night—belted a solo homer, his 11th of the season, to stretch the lead to 5–0. The team would tack on a sixth run in the bottom of the sixth when Freeman doubled in Yanquiel Fernandez to take a 6-1 lead.

Beck nearly made even more history himself, falling just a double short of the cycle. The rookie outfielder finished the night 3-for-5 with a homer, triple, two RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Freeman, Moniak, and Austin Nola also recorded multi-hit games in the Rockies’ 13-hit attack.

On the mound, Kyle Freeland delivered what might have been his most complete performance of the year. The veteran lefty worked around base traffic in the first and third innings before giving up a solo home run to Byron Buxton in the fifth. In the sixth, with two on and one out, Freeland struck out three straight batters to preserve the lead.

He finished with a final line of one run on five hits over six innings with three strikeouts and three walks, throwing 95 pitches and earning just his second win of the season.

Despite the early deficit, the Twins didn’t go quietly. After Buxton’s solo shot in the fifth, they clawed closer in the seventh inning. Buxton and Ryan Jeffers reached base before Willi Castro jumped on a Jake Bird offering and deposited it into the left-field seats for a three-run homer, cutting the lead to 6–4.

But the Rockies bullpen held firm the rest of the way. Victor Vodnik bridged the gap to the ninth, and closer Seth Halvorsen slammed the door, striking out two in a scoreless inning to earn his ninth save.

The Rockies and Twins will meet again Saturday night at Coors Field. Antonio Senzatela (3–13, 6.60 ERA) is scheduled to start for Colorado, while Minnesota will send out Zebby Matthews (1-1,5.21 ERA).
