Should the Tigers be prioritizing Gleyber Torres for an Extension?

Gleyber Torres turned down a long term deal with the Washington Nationals in order to remain at second base. At the time Detroit’s decision to acquire Gleyber was peculiar, given that the Tigers had already signed their second baseman of the future to a longterm deal. In the end Keith was able to find his way on both corners of the infield and Torres has been able to bounce back from a down year, in the way of an All-Star Caliber year. Detroit was In dyer need of a power right-handed bat. Although he hasn’t been able to turn back the hands of time to his 38 home-run season, he has instead honed back into his high end bat to ball skins, as a contact hitter at the top of the lineup. He has the second most hits amongst 2nd baseman, and comes in at 6th in the Major Leagues with a .376 OBP. He will take a streak of 25 games reaching base at least once.

With Torres only locked up through the end of the year. Should Torres me a priority to extend long-term beyond this season. Its quite apparent that in his age 28 season he still has plenty in the tank, and can contribute consistent play to a winning organization. He will never put up the gaudy power numbers that he enjoyed, which  you certainly could attribute to the hitter friendly Yankee stadium, but his uncanny ability to spray the ball to all fields in spacious Comerica, will continue to play well in the future.

The Detroit Tigers 20 year old top prospect Kevin Mcgonigle has played mostly shortstop but will likely slide over to 2nd when it’s all said and done. He has now been promoted to AA Eerie and jus completed his second Rising Stars Game. He will likely be knocking on the door to the majors in the next year or so. The extension of Torres could come as a conflict of interest as he soars through the system. The reality is, no matter how full-proof a prospect appears, you can never bank on them being as good as they project to be. With the window now open to win a World Series, if the Tigers can come to a reasonable agreement they definitely will have the payroll to come to a deal.
