Breakout Season Loading for Ron Holland

Ron Holland entered Summer League after newly celebrating a 20th birthday. In his final year as a teen Holland played in a 81 of 82 game season (minus 1 due to a suspension) as well as appearances in all 6 Postseason games that the Pistons participated in. He was primarily a high motor energy guy that could  defend his position, but offensively flashed some potential as a scoring matching a 26 point effort on two occasions this past season.

His offseason assignment was clear. Get stronger, improve his ball handling, and most importantly become a more efficient outside shooter. In the first game of the Summer we saw a glimpse of what a more polished skillset from the second year player. Early on he was aggressive on both ends of the floor displaying active hands and converting steals into transiton opportunities at the rim for himself and others. He even revealed a midrange pull-up jumper that we didn’t witness much last year. After a serviceable first half, Holland exploded for 18 in the 3rd quarter. Holland converted 8 of 12 attempts from the line and knocked down 4 of 5 from downtown, finishing with 28 points and 11 rebounds. Holland’s put-back slam off the miss of Tolu Smith put a exclamation point on end of one of the top outings of a player so far this Summer.

Holland has played professionally with the G league Ignite, and was a rotational player as a rookie in Detroit, so expectations were that he would show levels from the other players around him. He has exceeded those expectations so far. Assuming he can replicate the performance he put on Friday Detroit will likely shut him down for the remainder of the Summer with the hopes of allowing the other young players an opportunity to shine.

Going into the Regular Season Holland will be called on in an increased role supplying minutes at the wing position. His length and defensive versatility will enable him to help out in the front court behind Veteran Tobias Harris. He will start the year off the bench but if he can assert him self as an offensive asset he could be a player you see finishing games throughout the year.
