Cleveland Guardians Split Doubleheader with Chicago White Sox

The Cleveland Guardians almost erased half of their 10-game losing streak on Friday night.

After a rainout on Thursday, the Guardians beat the Chicago White Sox on 4-2 to kick off a doubleheader.

Cleveland was unable to win five straight, as Chicago won the nightcap 5-4 in 11 innings.

GUARDIANS WIN 4-2

Cleveland left-hander Logan Allen (6-7) gave up just one hit in six innings to keep the White Sox under control.

Daniel Schneemann and Angel Martinez hit back-to-back homers to put Cleveland ahead 2-0 in the second inning.

In the bottom of the inning, the White Sox tied the game with their lone hit. Luis Robert Jr. hit his ninth home run of the season.

Cleveland continued its long-ball barrage in the sixth inning, as Carlos Santana bashed a two-run homer off White Sox reliever Tyler Alexander (4-9).

The Cleveland bullpen delivered a classic performance to retain the 4-2 lead. Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, and Emmanuel Clase shut down the White Sox to preserve the victory.

Clase picked up his 20th save and reduced his ERA to 3.05. Remember how high it was in April?

WHITE SOX WIN 5-4

Lenyn Sosa homered off Gavin Williams to give the White Sox a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game.

Jose Ramirez answered with a two-run homer in the third, scoring Steven Kwan.

Miguel Vargas hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to tie the game 2-2. Sosa went deep again in the fifth to put the White Sox on top.

Brayan Rocchio tied the game for Cleveland with a double in the sixth to score Daniel Schneemann.

In the seventh, Angel Martinez continued his hot streak with a double to bring home Nolan Jones.

CAN’T WIN ‘EM ALL

However, the White Sox tied the game at 4-4 in the eighth. Josh Rojas hit a sacrifice fly off the Guardians’ backup closer, Paul Sewald.

Chicago scored the walk-off win in the 11th when Michael Tauchman hit an infield single off Kolby Allard (2-1).

Wait a minute. Didn’t the Guardians cut Allard recently?

Yes, but the Guardians re-signed the veteran lefty and put him back on the team, sending Tim Herrin to the minors.

That sounds like a bad idea, but Allard’s ERA is 2.45, compared to 3.99 for Herrin.

The series will continue on the South Side today at 4:10 Eastern. Tanner Bibee (4-9) will start for Cleveland against Sean Burke (4-8) for the White Sox.
