Saturday Night’s Main Event: Goldberg’s Last Match

There is a lot of wrestling to consume this weekend, but WWE continues to dominate the headlines with Saturday Night’s Main Event in Atlanta, Georgia, that will primarily be remembered as Goldberg’s last match.

But there are, as of now, three other matches on the NBC and Peacock special, and it is shaping up to be an entertaining evening for WWE fans.

Solo Sikoa vs. Jimmy Uso for the United States Championship

There are two scheduled title matches on Saturday evening and this is one of them. Solo Sikoa just won his first championship on the main roster, defeating Jacob Fatu at King and Queen of the Ring. Now, we have the two forgotten sons competing for the mid-card championship.

Solo Sikoa was envious of Jacob Fatu’s rise to stardom and the fans’ reception of him. Solo wanted fans to “acknowledge him,” instead, if you will. While Jimmy Uso is quickly becoming “the other twin” and the Marty Jannetty of The Usos. Jey is dubbed the “Main Event” and won the World Heavyweight Championship a year after the twins squared off at WrestleMania a year prior.

To me, this is only setting up for Jacob Fatu’s rematch. Anticipate Fatu showing up and wreaking havoc on Solo’s Bloodline, but at least he’ll have Jimmy on his side after this.

LA Knight vs. Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins and LA Knight have had this back and forth since the King of the Ring Tournament. Rollins is Mr. Money in the Bank, so while he awaits the perfect opportunity to cash in, he has filler feuds and a cross-branded one with LA Knight is where he begins.

These are always tricky. Rollins has Money in the Bank, so as long as he has the briefcase, he can lose every other match with the validation of a world championship in his future. On the other hand, the proverbial brass ring is generally always outside of LA Knight’s reach. I foresee Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed helping Seth Rollins win, because after all, how often does a Paul Heyman Guy lose?

Drew McIntyre vs. Randy Orton

Drew McIntyre returned last Friday on SmackDown and after interrupting Randy Orton and WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, McIntyre was welcomed back with an RKO, leading to this match. This contest feels thrown together, but nonetheless should be a great match, if their rivalry from 2020 and the pandemic era is any indication.

As for who should win, it could be a toss-up. Neither desperately needs to win, but Randy Orton did have a loss to Cody Rhodes in the King of the Ring finals. A loss for McIntyre could have the Scottish Warrior spin out and set up a rematch for later down the line, perhaps the first ever two-night SummerSlam weekend.

Gunther vs. Goldberg for the World Heavyweight Championship

At the end of the night, this is the moment fans will remember for years to come. This is Goldberg’s retirement match and he will try to win the World Heavyweight Championship for one last time in Atlanta.

While some could argue this Goldberg match is forced, it should not take away from the moment itself. It’s going to be what makes this night special. But this is going to be a notch in Gunther’s belt and Goldberg will go out the old traditional way, on his back with a nice send-off from the Atlanta crowd.
