Send Me an Angel: Martinez Grand Slam in the 10th Wins It for Cleveland Guardians
Many Cleveland Guardians fans weren’t optimistic about their team’s chances last night against the Houston Astros.
Sure, their heroes had broken a 10-game losing streak, but now they were facing All-Star Hunter Brown.
Instead, Cleveland’s offense exploded in a 10-6 victory over the Astros at Daikin Park.
HUNTING THE HUNTER
Jose Ramirez jumped on Brown in the first inning with a two-run homer, his 16th of the season.
Houston came back in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly by Jose Altuve (“Booooooooo!”)
Cleveland continued hitting off the vaunted Brown with three runs in the third inning.
Nolan Jones hit an RBI double, and Daniel Schneemann followed with a two-run single.
Brayan Rocchio slammed a solo homer in the fourth to increase Cleveland’s lead to 6-1.
NOT SO FAST!
My dad was a longtime Cleveland sports fan, and he used to say, “They don’t give out trophies at halftime.”
So you know what happened next.
The Astros rallied with three runs in the fifth inning. Altuve hit a two-run double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Victor Caratini.
Houston tied the game 6-6 in the eighth on an RBI double by Taylor Trammell and an RBI single by Altuve off Hunter Gaddis.
IT’S HERO TIME
Cleveland began the 10th inning with Steven Kwan as the ghost runner on second. Will Wilson sacrificed him to third.
Houston walked Ramirez intentionally, and he stole second. Santana also drew a walk, loading the bases.
Josh Hader, another Astros All-Star, struck out pinch-hitter Johnathan Rodriguez, but Martinez socked a grand slam to left.
Emmanuel Clase finished off the Astros for Cleveland’s second win in a row.
DID WE PACK A BROOM?
The Guardians will try to sweep the first-place Astros in their own ballpark tonight at 8:10 Eastern.
Slade Cecconi (3-4) will get the start for Cleveland against Brandon Walter (1-1) for Houston.
