Reliever meltdown leads to 10-2 loss for Rockies.
For the second consecutive night at Fenway Park, the Colorado Rockies were overpowered by the Red Sox in a lopsided 10–2 defeat on Tuesday, July 8. The blowout loss dropped Colorado to 21‑71 on the season and marked yet another harsh reminder of their ongoing struggles, while Boston improved to 48‑45, riding high on yet another dominant performance.
Rockies starter Kyle Freeland took the mound hoping to build on a quality start in his last outing. Freeland came just shy as he exited after just 5⅔ innings, allowing three runs on four hits, issuing two walks, and striking out six. He kept pace until running into trouble in the sixth inning with two outs.
The bullpen fared worse. José Mejía surrendered a run in just one-third of an inning, while Jake Bird and Zach Agnos combined to yield six more runs in the seventh. Bird in particular wilted, delivering a five-run disaster that effectively put the game out of reach by the seventh inning.
On the flip side, Red Sox ace Brayan Bello was nothing short of dominant. The righty fired a complete-game gem—nine strong innings, allowing just two runs on five hits with ten strikeouts—enforcing Boston’s relentless pace and control.
Colorado’s bats didn’t show much life until Hunter Goodman’s ninth inning two-run blast—his 17th homer of the season. Overall they struggled to get anything going offensively and had rare opportunities with runners on base. The offense has been a major problem all season and that issue was in full force Tuesday.
The series concludes on Wednesday as the Rockies try to avoid the sweep with Lucas Giolito taking the hill for Boston and Antonio Senzatela for the Rockies.
