Chelsea Club World Cup Semi Final Player Ratings
Chelsea has not only strung together an impressive run of results, but their performances under Enzo Maresca have reached new heights. The 2–0 win over Fluminense secured the Blues a place in this weekend’s final, where they’ll face either Real Madrid or PSG in what promises to be a thrilling showdown. Before looking ahead, let’s reflect on the semi-final and break down how each Chelsea player performed in the victory.
Starters
Robert Sanchez: 5.5/10
Solid enough as a shot-stopper and handled most routine work comfortably. However, he had a familiar lapse in judgment when he hesitated to come off his line, nearly costing Chelsea a goal. Fortunately for him, Cucurella was alert with a goal-line clearance to spare his blushes.
Marc Cucurella: 8/10
Once again, another great performance from Cucurella, who is no doubt cementing himself as one of the best left-backs in the world. The goal-line save was quality, and the rest of his defensive work was as sound as ever. Due to Malo Gusto being on the right, he was limited in going forward.
Tosin Adarabioyo: 7/10
Clean sheet for Tosin, who was at the heart of the defence with Levi Colwill out. He was a dominating figure in the middle of the park and very strong aerially. His leadership also shone through once again, so all in all, a good performance from Tosin.
Trevoh Chalobah: 7/10
Once again, a stout defensive performance from Chalobah, who will likely line up with Colwill during the final. No major mistakes, which he can sometimes be prone to, but he continues his solid form. I hope he has done enough to stay in the squad and not be sold for pure profit reasons.
Malo Gusto: 6.5/10
This was Gusto’s best performance in a while, which isn’t saying much, but he looked far more secure in one-on-one situations. He was also given the freedom to roam both inside and down the right flank to support Nkunku. With James likely to be fit for the final, Gusto will probably return to the bench.
Moises Caicedo: 7/10
The best defensive midfielder in the world once again looked very solid at the base of the midfield, constantly breaking up play and helping the team break the lines. He picked up an injury scare near the end of the game, described as a tweaked ankle, but early signs suggest he should be fine for Sunday’s final.
Enzo Fernandez: 7.5/10
He was deployed in the left half-space but also rotated often with the full-backs and Caicedo to disrupt the Fluminense press. He picked up an assist on the second goal, making Chelsea’s vice-captain the standalone leader in that category for the tournament.
Cole Palmer: 7/10
He was floating around the pitch, finding space wherever available, and showed excellent ball control to keep possession under pressure from Fluminense defenders. He found himself in on goal at one point, but Jackson chose not to square it to him, leaving the Chelsea star visibly frustrated.
Pedro Neto: 7/10
Chelsea’s best player of the tournament was once again efficient, this time deployed down the left. He was a constant threat all afternoon, creating plenty of half-chances for Chelsea. Although he didn’t register a goal or assist today, Neto continues to impress the entire Chelsea fan base.
Christopher Nkunku: 6.5/10
One of the strangest elements of this tournament has been the revenge arc of Christo Nkunku, who has played quite well for Chelsea after a rather disappointing two years at the club. I’m not sure he will remain at Chelsea, but his performances are definitely boosting his value.
João Pedro: 9.5/10
He was on the beach this time last week back home in Brazil, and now he has scored two phenomenal golazos against the club that helped launch his professional career. Originally seen as a versatile forward, he has really stepped up and claimed that striker role going into next season.
Bench
Nicolas Jackson: 4.5/10
You have to feel for Nico, who has seen his role over the past two years gradually taken away from him. Even though the red cards were completely his fault, his performance today showed a player clearly desperate for something to go his way.
Noni Madueke: 4.5/10
He wasn’t great today but really didn’t have much to do. Given that he has agreed personal terms to move to Arsenal, he definitely looked very checked out.
Reece James: 5.5/10
Like Madueke didn’t have a whole lot to do but still showed his fight and diving into tackles to close out the game.
Andrey Santos & Kiernan Dewsbury: N/A
Chelsea will now turn their attention to preparing for the final of the inaugural 32-team Club World Cup. That said, I want to hear from you, so how would you grade each Chelsea player’s performance against Fluminense?
